Chosen Family and Truth

Tonight I met up with someone I had not seen in about six years. I got there way too early because apparently I still have “middle-aged dad terrified of being late” permanently installed in my operating system. There was no traffic, so I ended up wandering around a couple of stores nearby while I waited. One was this strange Japanese import shop full of Hello Kitty merch, claw machines, makeup, and wildly overpriced snacks. Right next door was a Daiso with half the same things for one tenth the price. Honestly, I loved both for completely different reasons. Next time I go back I want to spend more time looking through the curry mixes because I absolutely love Japanese curry.

Eventually I gave up pretending to browse and went to wait in the parking garage. That is when the emotional chaos really started. My CGM was alarming low, I was starving because it had been way too long since lunch, and emotionally I was all over the place. Part of me was genuinely excited to see someone who had once been a huge part of my life. Another part of me was terrified that the “new me” would somehow make everything awkward or different.

I do not think people realize that when someone has known you for decades, they are not just attached to your face or your voice. They are attached to the role you occupied in their life. I had no idea what would happen when that older version of me collided with the person I have slowly been becoming.

Then they arrived.

The second I saw them, I thought I was going to cry. I got a huge hug immediately, and within maybe thirty seconds the fear started loosening its grip on me. They introduced me to their partner, who was incredibly warm and friendly, and we headed into a board game gastropub to play Root. I had never played before while they were experienced enough to casually discuss strategy like tiny woodland military historians.

We ate first. I had steak and mashed potatoes that were honestly fantastic, and later tried a chicken karaage dish called “Mana Rocks” that was really good, even if the steak still won the evening. Mostly though, we talked. We caught each other up on the last six years of our lives, which is a strange thing to try to compress into one dinner conversation.

After a while I noticed myself hesitating whenever I talked about certain parts of my life. I kept editing stories in real time or steering around details because the full truth would not make sense without context. Eventually I realized I had reached a crossroads. I could either continue spending the entire evening hiding something enormous from people I cared about, or I could trust my chosen family enough to let them actually see me.

So I told them.

The response was so simple and kind that it almost broke me. There was no dramatic pause, no weird tension, no feeling of distance suddenly appearing across the table. Just understanding. Questions. Curiosity. Acceptance. At one point one of them told me that I seemed more alive and present than I had all those years ago, and honestly I think that sentence is going to stay with me for a very long time.

I think one of my deepest fears through all of this has been that the people who knew me before would somehow prefer the older version of me, even if that version was exhausted and slowly disappearing inside the role they expected me to play. But sitting there talking openly about transition, work fears, fake nails, bathrooms, relationships, and life in general, I realized something important. The old version of me was surviving. This version of me is actually here.

The rest of the night felt easy after that. We played games, laughed constantly, argued about strategy, and at one point they even tried to team up against me near the end of the game. Somehow the newbie still won.

More importantly though, for the first time in a very long time, I did not feel isolated. I did not feel like I was performing a role or carefully managing every sentence before I spoke it out loud. I just felt present. It was a night full of laughter, understanding, and the kind of warmth that reminds you life is not over just because it changed.

We are already planning another outing.

And next time, they will get to meet Amber.
