Red Vest Heroes of Hope

As the floodwaters surged into his house, Miskam, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather in Sarolangun district, felt a growing sense of despair. Days passed without any sign of help, leaving Miskam to wonder if anyone would come to their aid. Just when hope seemed lost, the red vest heroes of the Indonesian Red Cross appeared, bringing much-needed relief to the worried villagers.

The Indonesian Red Cross volunteers were the first and only significant help Miskam could recall. In an area prone to frequent floods, the community had long suffered without substantial assistance. This time, however, the presence of the Red Cross marked a turning point in their struggle.

Miskam’s home, located on relatively higher ground, was spared the worst of the flooding. But he watched helplessly as his neighbors’ homes were engulfed by water during three relentless days of rain. “I was fortunate to live on higher ground, but the rain still brought the water just 30 centimeters from my floors,” Miskam recounted.

Moved by the suffering around him and inspired by the compassion of the red vest heroes, Miskam opened his doors to neighbors seeking refuge. Despite his relative safety, his family, like many others, fell ill with waterborne diseases. His wife, neighbors, and children were frequently sick, leaving them in desperate need of help.

Their spirits lifted when the village leader announced the arrival of the Indonesian Red Cross with free medical services. “Our village leader informed us about the Indonesian Red Cross providing free treatment,” Miskam said with a glimmer of hope in his eyes.

“This flood lasted six months, much longer than the previous three-month flood. The Indonesian Red Cross’s services have been crucial, especially for those living on the edges of the village who were most affected,” said Thamrin, the village leader. “Many residents faced severe health issues. Thanks to the free medical services provided by PMI and the support from local midwives and healthcare workers, our community found relief. We are immensely grateful.”

Miskam vividly remembered the tireless efforts of the red vest volunteers in helping the villagers recover from the flood and the associated illnesses. This sentiment was echoed by village leader Thamrin and his secretary, Muhammad Yamin. “The strength of the Indonesian Red Cross lies in their direct, on-the-ground operations. We are deeply thankful for their assistance,” Thamrin remarked.

Both Miskam and Thamrin expressed profound gratitude for the continued presence and support of these red vest heroes. Their hope is that such aid remains consistent whenever disaster strikes. On Friday, February 16, a devastating flood of 20 to 60 centimeters surged Kabupaten Bungo, Provinsi Jambi, nearly sinking at least 485 homes. Triggered by intense rainfall, rivers like Batang Uleh, Batang Tebo, and Batang Jujuhan overflowed, forcing evacuees to seek shelter with relatives or neighbors, while others stayed in makeshift tents.
