Summer Entertaining: Tall Ships, Tomatoes, And 250 Years of American Spirit

What an incredible summer for the United States!

The excitement feels larger than life this year as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday. Add World Cup fever to the mix, with fans from around the globe filling our cities and sharing their adventures across social media, and this summer has become something truly special. The energy, pride, and sense of celebration have been impossible to miss.

It has been a season to remember.

In honor of our nation’s 250th anniversary, I decided to create a tablescape inspired by the tall ships that carried brave men and women across vast oceans in search of opportunity, freedom, and a new beginning. Those ships represent more than transportation. They symbolize courage, hope, sacrifice, and the determination to build a better life.

I love the Fourth of July. It has always been one of my favorite holidays. Family and friends gathering for barbecues, fireworks lighting up the night sky, and the simple joy of harvesting the first ripe tomatoes from the garden are traditions I look forward to every year.

Normally, my Fourth of July tables feature stars, stripes, and plenty of red, white, and blue. But celebrating 250 years of American history called for something different. Something with a story.

Recently, my daughter acquired a set of Wedgwood “Flying Cloud” tall ship dishes from her mother-in-law. Knowing my love of both history and tablescaping, she generously offered to let me borrow them for this special occasion.

The moment I unpacked the pieces, inspiration struck.

The rich crimson chargers immediately reminded me of the bold colors found in early American flags. Deep cobalt blue glassware echoed the oceans that connected continents and carried dreamers toward new horizons. The delicate, tall-ship illustrations became the stars of the table, quietly telling stories of voyages that changed lives and helped shape a nation.

To soften the nautical theme, I added creamy linen runners and napkins, creating the feeling of sails catching a summer breeze. Blue-and-white florals brought a touch of coastal charm, while a model sailing ship anchored the centerpiece, tying the entire theme together. Flickering candlelight reflected off the dishes and glassware, creating a warm glow that felt both festive and nostalgic.

Incorporating fresh tomatoes from the garden not only brought their vibrant red color, which complemented the patriotic palette, but they also reminded me of what America’s story is really about: home, family, hard work, and enjoying the simple rewards that come from planting something and watching it grow.

As guests gathered around the table, I found myself thinking about the generations who came before us. The sailors, settlers, immigrants, dreamers, and builders who arrived on unfamiliar shores carrying little more than hope and determination. Their journeys helped create the country we celebrate today.

Perhaps that’s why this tablescape felt especially meaningful. It wasn’t just about dishes, decorations, or creating a beautiful table. It was about honoring the adventurous spirit that has always been part of the American story.

From the tall ships of centuries past to the crowds filling our stadiums today, the story remains much the same. People come together seeking connection, opportunity, adventure, and the hope of something better. For 250 years, America has been shaped by dreamers, explorers, immigrants, builders, and families who believed in possibilities beyond the horizon.

That is certainly a reason to celebrate.

And for me, there is no better place to celebrate than around a table.

A table is where stories are shared, traditions are passed from one generation to the next, and memories are created. It is where grandparents tell family stories, children ask questions, friends linger a little longer, and gratitude naturally finds its way into the conversation.

As I look at these tall ships sailing across my dishes, I can’t help but think of the countless journeys that helped shape our nation and the families that followed. Their courage gave us the opportunity to gather in freedom, enjoy the blessings of home, and celebrate the simple joys of life together.

This summer, as fireworks light the sky, World Cup fans fill our cities with excitement, and America marks its 250th birthday, I am reminded that our greatest treasures are not found in monuments or stadiums. They are found around our tables, surrounded by the people we love.

And that, perhaps, is the most beautiful American tradition of all.
