The Door That Appeared at Midnight

The village of Elmshade was known for one thing, a strange fog that rolled through the streets every full moon. The villagers had grown used to it, but they followed one unwritten rule: Never walk into the forest after midnight. Seventeen-year-old Clara had always laughed at the superstition. Ghost stories and ancient legends were meant to scare children, not her. One chilly autumn night, Clara sat by her bedroom window when she noticed something unusual. A faint golden light flickered deep within the forest. It wasn’t there before. Curiosity won. She grabbed her lantern and slipped outside. The village was silent. Even the crickets seemed to have stopped singing. As she approached the forest, the golden glow grew brighter. It danced between the trees like a floating star. Clara followed it. Minutes later, she reached a clearing she had never seen before. In the center stood an enormous wooden door. Just a door. No walls. No house. Nothing. The door was covered in silver symbols that shimmered like moonlight. At its center hung a key made of crystal. Her heart pounded. Who would leave a door in the middle of nowhere? As she stepped closer, the symbols began glowing brighter. Suddenly, a whisper echoed around her. “Open it…” Clara spun around. Nobody was there. The whisper came again. “Open it…” Against her better judgment, she turned the crystal key. The door creaked open. Beyond it wasn’t another forest. It was an endless sky filled with floating islands, glowing waterfalls, and giant silver birds soaring through clouds of purple mist. Clara stared in disbelief. A hidden world. A magical world. Before she could step through, she heard another voice behind her. “Don’t enter.” An old woman stood at the edge of the clearing. Her eyes shone with the same silver light as the symbols. “Why not?” Clara asked. “Because every visitor is offered a gift,” the woman replied. “But every gift demands a price.” Clara glanced at the breathtaking world beyond the door. “What kind of price?” The old woman pointed toward the sky. “That depends on what you desire most.” At that moment, Clara remembered her father, who had disappeared years ago while exploring distant lands. If this world held magic, perhaps it could reveal where he had gone. She stepped through the doorway. The sky-world welcomed her with warm winds and sparkling rivers of light. Soon she found a crystal lake. Its surface began to move. Images appeared. Her father. Alive. Standing on a distant island. Tears filled her eyes. Then words appeared across the water. “To know where he is, you must surrender your happiest memory.” Clara froze. The memory of her father teaching her to ride a bicycle flashed through her mind. It was her most treasured moment. Was the truth worth losing it forever? For a long time, she stood in silence. Then she smiled. “No.” The lake rippled. The vision vanished. Instantly, the magical world began to glow brighter. A voice echoed from the sky. “You chose wisdom over desire. Few do.” The door reappeared before her. When Clara stepped back into the forest, dawn was breaking. The mysterious door was gone. But in her pocket lay a small silver feather. Proof that the adventure had been real. And sometimes, Clara wondered whether the greatest mysteries were not the ones we solve but the ones we choose to leave unopened.
