Years after watching The Vampire Diaries, I still find myself thinking about her choices, her fears, and the person she might have been if life had gone differently.

These aren’t character-analysis questions.

They’re the questions Katherine Pierce forces you to ask.

SURVIVAL

Q1) Who is Katherine when she’s not trying to survive?

I think Katherine Pierce is just a little girl at heart who was compelled to run away for an exhausting 500 years. She was always being chased, and everything she did was for her survival. I think if the circumstances were different, she would be living with Stefan and Nadia in a remote cabin away from all the chaos.

Q2) Is Katherine’s personality real or just a mask?

In furtherance of the above answer, I think her personality is just a mask. She has to be tough all the time because she always has to be two steps ahead of her predators. She can never stop, she can never slow down, and she can never show her weakness. Her biggest strength is the mask that she wears.

Q3) Does she know who she really is anymore?

I think she wore the villain mask for such a long time that she eventually became the villain herself. She thrived on chaos, which was something she never wanted. So no, I don’t think she knows who she really is anymore. Some people see her as the definitive villain of TVD, while my personal opinion is that all she ever wanted was someone to save her.

Q4) Was she born manipulative, or did she learn it?

I don’t think she was born manipulative. She learned it through years of running and surviving.

Q5) Is Katherine confident or just terrified of appearing weak?

I think it’s both because she really is the living example of “fake it till you make it.” She had her vulnerable moments, and when she felt she couldn’t survive anymore, she tried to commit suicide before Stefan saved her. So yes, she’s definitely human like all the other characters, but I think she carries her fear of appearing weak as confidence.

The Survivor

Q6) Is Katherine a villain or the ultimate survivor?

In my personal opinion, Katherine is the ultimate survivor. She was never a villain to me. I loved her character. It was extremely complicated and totally badass.

Q7) What is the worst thing Katherine did purely to survive?

While I don’t remember the worst thing Katherine did because I watched TVD ages ago, the internet says it was sacrificing Jeremy. During the quest for the Cure in Season 4, Katherine forcibly held Jeremy down and fed him to the ancient immortal Silas. This act was not only a betrayal, but it also resulted in Jeremy’s death.

Another terrible thing was transferring her soul into Elena’s body after her death and going after Stefan even though her long-lost daughter was begging her to come home with her.

And, of course, what she did to Stefan.

Q8) At what point does survival stop being an excuse?

Feeding Jeremy to Silas so she could steal the Cure. There was no reason for her to get involved in the Cure mess, as Klaus was no longer interested in chasing her. Katherine’s delusion that everything was about her led directly to her downfall.

Q9) If you spent 500 years being hunted, would you become like Katherine?

Not at all haha. I don’t think I’m that strong. I probably wouldn’t survive even 20 minutes.

Love, Fear, and Humanity

Q10) Is fear the most important force in Katherine’s life?

Well, yes. I think whatever terrible things she did, she blamed them on her fear of being killed by Klaus. But that doesn’t justify her motto of “rather you die than I.” She was selfish, manipulative, and killed people according to her own convenience.

Q11) Did Katherine ever truly love Stefan?

Yes, I do think she completely and truly loved Stefan. He was her one true love. But she was heartbroken by the fact that he actively chose Elena over her every time, even when Elena broke Stefan’s heart by sleeping with Damon.

Q12) What is Katherine most afraid of?

Katherine is most afraid of dying. She thinks humans are inferior, and she wanted a sense of superiority over others. She liked being powerful. I think the biggest punishment for Katherine was becoming human because that’s what she feared the most.

Q13) Which event changed Katherine the most?

I think it was the day Klaus massacred her family. That’s when her human innocence was stripped away, replacing it with a ruthless, survival-at-all-costs mentality that defined her centuries on the run.

Q14) Would Katherine have become Katherine if Klaus had never existed?

No, I don’t think so. She is who she is because of Klaus. If Klaus had never existed, the part of her that died the day he massacred her family would never have died. She lost her innocence that day. She became Katherine that day.

Q15) Did Katherine love people or did she love being loved?

I think Katherine loved being loved. She was always jealous of Elena because Elena had family, friends, love, and a sense of belonging.

But I also think she genuinely loved certain people. Even though Damon was ready to give her everything, she didn’t want it. This answer is a bit conflicted. Maybe if she had received the love she wanted from Stefan, she would have been less harsh.

Why We Still Talk About Katherine

Q16) Why do fans love Katherine despite everything she does?

I think people, including myself, love Katherine’s DGAF attitude. She is extremely charming and badass.

She suffered more than almost anyone in The Vampire Diaries, especially when you look at her childhood and everything she went through. From the very beginning, life gave her no chance, and it never really stopped after that.

She spent her entire life on the run, fleeing, surviving, and never being able to settle down. She never had the luxury of building real human connections, trusting people, or loving without fear. Everything about her life was centered around survival.

Yet, in the series, she is widely hated. She’s seen as selfish, manipulative, and cruel. But for me, that’s exactly why she’s the character I feel the most empathy for.

I love her so much, and I find her incredibly touching.

And by the way, the scene where her daughter dies was incredibly sad and beautiful at the same time. It’s one of those moments where, despite everything she became, you can see just how deeply human Katherine really is.

Katherine wasn’t born evil. She became who she was in a world that never offered her safety or love. Deep down, behind everything she turned into, there is above all a broken girl who was never allowed to be weak.
