Episode 007:

“The Geometry of Home”

The bunker kitchen did not feel like a military asset; it felt like a cage that smelled of old lard and yellowing floor wax. Unwashed coffee mugs teetered in the steel sink, and a sour smell clung to the air like a warning.

Kieran Orman stood before the stainless-steel refrigerator, his fingers tracing the laminated edge of the weekly chore matrix he’d printed himself. Every block was perfectly filled with black marker, a rigid, predictable grid designed to keep his found family from sliding backward into the chaos they had all run from.

TACTICAL BAY LOG: 04:12 UTC

  • Telemetry Operator: Orman, K.
  • Current Directive: Maintenance of Base Baseline Order.
  • Bunker Status: Internal tension at critical threshold.

“You’re staring at it again,” Jaco Gregorian said, her voice dropping to a tight whisper as she entered. She didn’t look at the chart; she looked at the raw edge of Kieran’s profile. As the squad’s emotional anchor, she could practically taste the systemic stress vibrating off him, absorbing it into her own chest until her shoulders ached. She slammed a fresh stack of LiPo battery casings onto the laminate table with enough force to rattle the salt shakers. “Christopher didn’t eat his rations again. He’s down in the telemetry bay, staring at a dead monitor.”

Kieran didn’t turn around. His fingers tightened against his sides, curling into fists. “The schedule dictates mandatory caloric intake before the low-altitude domestic sweep. If the youngest asset drops baseline focus, the entire sUAS deployment fails.”

“He’s fifteen, Kieran,” Jaco snapped, stepping into his space, her martial arts posture aligning instinctively for a confrontation. “He isn’t an asset. He’s a kid whose knuckles are bleeding because he grips the controller too hard.”

Down the corridor, behind the heavy fire doors where the cold rattle of the perimeter fencing echoed through the ventilation shafts, the air changed. It tasted of ozone and static.

Christopher Erland sat inside the flight rig, his slight frame swallowed by the high-backed canvas seat. He wore his FPV goggles lowered, splitting his consciousness from the concrete walls of the bunker and casting it into the gray dawn over the local drainage canals, their own home turf. His thumbs twitched on the joysticks, executing a flawless, intuitive bank around an abandoned cooling tower. He possessed no engineering genius, but the aircraft moved as if it were a physical extension of his nerve endings.

Behind him, Shane Seeger leaned against a rack of diagnostic hardware, his face illuminated by the green glow of rolling lines of cyber warfare code. To Shane, the world was a series of optimization problems to be patched. He preferred the clean predictability of syntax to the messy, volatile friction of human emotion. “The nose is dipping three degrees on the lateral roll,” Shane muttered, his tone entirely clinical. “Adjust the pitch bias on the controller interface.” “Your fingers are damp; you’re introducing micro-steering variables into the telemetry stream.”

“I’ve got it,” Christopher whispered, his breath shallow and uneven as his footsteps slowed down mentally, locked inside the sky. He didn’t have the psychological armor his older peers wore. Every camera zoom into a backyard, every thermal silhouette of a civilian walking a dog on the streets below, felt like a wire wrapped tightly around his throat.

“Let the kid fly, Kieran,” Lorelei Beaumont called out from the workbench, where she was casually tossing a lithium-polymer battery cell from hand to hand with reckless bravado. Her FPV goggles rested on top of her messy blonde hair like a crown. She lived entirely in the present momentum of adrenaline, using flash and humor to mask the deep-seated trauma of what they had done in the northern sectors. “He flies circles around the defense network by pure instinct. Your algorithms are just jealous.”

The door slid open with a heavy hydraulic hiss. Kieran entered, followed closely by Jaco. The air in the room instantly grew tighter.

“Christopher, clear the console,” Kieran commanded, his voice adopting the rigid, executive structure that always served as his defensive shield. “We are running a system-wide diagnostic check on the telemetry bay floor mounts.”

Christopher didn’t move. He kept his head down, locked inside the goggle feed. “I’m in the middle of a sweep, Kieran. Just five more minutes.”

“Now,” Kieran stepped forward, his hand reaching out to manually pull the primary link cable from Christopher’s rig.

Jaco blocked his arm, her eyes flashing with righteous fury. “Don’t touch that line. If you sever the link-latency block while he’s in ATTI mode, the drone drifts into civilian airspace.”

“I am the squad commander,” Kieran stated, his face dropping into a stony, expressionless mask that concealed his deep childhood fear of being discarded and losing control. “The schedule takes precedence over personal flight preferences. If we do not optimize our maintenance intervals, the handlers will classify this unit as non-operational.”

Shane didn’t look up from his screen, though his fingers paused over his keyboard. “Mechanically speaking, Kieran’s execution matrix is correct. But human execution metrics are currently deteriorating.”

Localized link latency is spiking to 180 ms. Somatic feedback initiated.

Inside the goggles, Christopher gasped. The quadcopter’s flight feed stuttered. The real battle wasn’t out there in the clouds; it was right here in the widening gap between Kieran’s clinical rules and the fragile lives they were desperately trying to protect inside their own concrete walls.
