Fall rests, the pecans whisper

Fall has arrived in Arkansas, but like hosts to a wealthy traveler who spends her first day resting after her long trip, we know of her presence here but have yet to enjoy her company.

The shade of my backyard “twin trees”

  • not twins in truth; one is elm and the other pecan — knock enough degrees off the sun that I decide for a fire pit. Fallen branches and dried leaves are mixed with several dozen pecans fetched from the ground. Some are wrapped in rubbery lime covers and others are armored in black.

A good number of pecans will whisper from the flames, and then softly “pop.” Loud enough for your attention, but politely, not wishing to upset the calm of the moment.

Not yet sunset, but with dinner underway, my daughter knocks repeatedly at the patio window; laughing and running away each time I turn around. I smile. She could learn from the kind example of the pecans.
