The beautiful Drabble Train is coming!

Avery and a group of boys with physical limitations loved Australia. So far — they had conquered every challenge!

“I want to do a walkabout, Mr. Davis,” Avery pleaded. “I’ll get permission from my parents and go for two days.”

Mr. Davis agreed, with the condition that he would follow, keeping Avery in sight.

The walkabout began, and Avery’s prosthetic leg was doing well. It was October; the weather was cool. He often sat to meditate and absorb nature. Mr. Davis stayed back.

At the beginning of day two, Avery was calm and peaceful, having found his calling — A Wildlife Biologist.

A walkabout is an Aboriginal Australian tradition where a young person, usually a boy, embarks on a journey alone in the wilderness. The goal is to make a transition from childhood to adulthood as they spend days, weeks or months alone and learning to be self-sufficient.

Today, the practice can be modified, still respecting the core cultural significance and spiritual meaning of the walkabout when making changes.

**Drop readers into the action.** With flash fiction, you don’t have the luxury of slowly building up to the main event. Start your story in the middle of the action. This technique, called in medias res, plunges readers directly into a pivotal moment.

“The bomb timer ticked down from 60 seconds as Jake fumbled with the wire cutters.” This opening creates urgency. Readers are thrown into a high-stakes situation and want to know if Jake will defuse the bomb in time.

“Maria’s hand shook as she raised the gun, aiming it at the man who’d ruined her life.” This drops us into a moment of intense conflict. We don’t know the backstory, but we’re immediately invested in finding out what led to this confrontation.
