Traditional papermaking requires seventy-two steps. Cutting bamboo. Soaking. Pounding. Scooping. Drying.

I once met a woman named Suwan in an old workshop in Zhejiang. She didn‘t stop. “If the rhythm breaks,” she said, “the fibers won’t hold.”

The pulp slid off the bamboo screen. Water dripped like a second hand.

That was the moment I realized — she wasn‘t just making paper. She was marking time.

Intangible heritage is not a museum piece. It’s someone in a fading studio, hammering pulp, refusing to stop.

This craft is disappearing. But Suwan hasn‘t left yet.
