I am a member of the Bugis tribe in South Sulawesi. The Bugis, along with other tribes in Sulawesi, such as the Mandar, Makassar, Toraya, and Kajang, have been renowned for their strong mystical practices since ancient times.
There are many forms of mystical knowledge in Sulawesi, such as pesugihan (a form of wealth), love potions, black magic, and invulnerability. But I don’t practice any of those!
The science of invulnerability became well-known, often studied, and used. The Dutch, who once colonized Sulawesi, had difficulty dealing with these invulnerable individuals, as no sharp weapon could penetrate their skin.
There are several stories about invulnerability that I have read, including the following:
- Arung Palakka La Pattobune’s father was executed by being placed in a mortar (a container for pounding rice) and beaten with a pestle (a heavy, blunt piece of wood) to death. This was done because he was immune to weapons. The person who executed him was the Prime Minister of the Gowa Kingdom, Karaeng Karunrung, because La Pattobune went berserk and killed several Gowa soldiers after seeing the suffering of the Bone people who were oppressed by the Gowa Kingdom. I am proud of La Pattobune’s patriotic attitude :)
- Pong Tiku or Pontiku, also known as Ne’ Baso , was a king’s son who led a guerrilla war against the Dutch in Tanah Toraja, South Sulawesi, around the 1900s. During his attack on the Dutch in 1906, he was captured. Pontiku was executed in 1907 by having his bones crushed one by one. Amidst the excruciating pain, the Dutch discovered a talisman embedded in his body. Pontiku was finally executed using a sharp weapon.
- Ammana Pattowali , the warlord of the Balanipa Kingdom in Mandar, He fought in Mandar around 1905. In the midst of his resistance, a traitor appeared who revealed the secret of his location. The Dutch attacked the location and captured Ammana Pattowali and executed him there. According to the person who buried him, “The hero (Ammana I Pattolawali) died without any injuries. He could withstand bullets and other sharp objects. What caused his miscarriage was that his arm was pulled by several Dutch soldiers, until his arm bone separated from his body. Blood came out of his mouth, ears, and eyes.”
