I Built a Learning System in Notion Before I Lost My Momentum — Here Is What It Looks Like

And why May 4 was the day it had to happen.

There is a particular feeling that comes after finishing a course. A brief sense of progress, then a quiet question: what did I actually retain? You close the tab, move to the next thing, and the learning dissolves faster than you expect. A week later, someone asks you about it and you give a vaguer answer than you should.

That feeling is what I was trying to outrun on May 4.

I had just finished the fourth course in the IBM Applied AI Developer Professional Certificate — Python for Data Science, AI and Development. Python. A language I had used before. And still, parts of it slowed me down in a way I didn’t expect. Data structures that should have felt familiar needed a second look. Functions I had written before needed relearning.

That was the signal. If I could go soft on Python fundamentals after having studied them — what was happening to everything else I was consuming? The prompt engineering concepts from Course 3. The AI application frameworks from Course 2. Were those actually in my head, or had I just watched enough videos to feel like they were?

I didn’t wait to find out. That same day, I built the system.

It is not complicated. Two components, each with a clear job.

The Daily Activity Log is exactly what it sounds like — a record of what I did, how long I spent, what I learned, and how the day felt. Not a journal. A log. Something I can look back at in three months and see whether I was actually working or just feeling busy.

The Learning Tracker holds every course — status, skills covered, key takeaway, and a reflection written while the material is still fresh. The Course 4 entry reads: “Python is the core tool for building AI systems — understanding fundamentals is essential before moving into real applications.” That one sentence is worth more to me than a certificate screenshot.

Here is what May 4 actually looked like in the log.

Woke up between 9 and 10. Energy level: normal. Mood: focused. Finished the remaining Python course components in the morning, then spent the rest of the day building the Notion system itself. Eight hours of learning, total. Went to sleep somewhere between 2 and 3 AM.

The reflection I wrote that night: “The last two weeks were heavy on consumption and speed. Today marks the shift toward structure, tracking, and intentional learning. Setting up the system feels like laying the foundation for the next phase — building, not just learning.”

Five stars. Not because it was easy. Because it mattered.

That reflection is the point. The system is not about being organized. It is about shifting from passive consumption — watching, absorbing, moving on — to something that compounds. Every log entry is a small proof that the day happened. Every tracker update is evidence I can show myself, and eventually someone else, that the learning was real.

A job application is not the only place this matters. It matters now, in the daily choice between doing the work and just feeling like you did.

This is version one. It will change — probably more than once. I am not recommending it as the right way or the only way. I am sharing it because it is what I built when I realized that momentum, once lost, is genuinely hard to rebuild. I did not want to learn that lesson at week six.

The system exists to support what comes next: projects, building, shipping real things. A beautiful Notion setup was never the goal. Staying consistent long enough to have something worth showing — that is the goal.
