The Danger of Being “Too Comfortable”

“For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.” — [Jude 1:4]

There is something beautiful about intimacy with God, drawing near to Him, knowing His voice, and resting in His presence. But Jude, writing with urgency to the early church, warns us of a subtle and dangerous shift that can happen when closeness is mistaken for casualness.

He speaks of people who had “crept in unnoticed.” Disrespect rarely announces itself. It does not arrive with warning signs. Instead, it slips in quietly, often disguised as familiarity.

We often do not notice the signs at first. Yet if we look closely, they may be there:

  • Casual worship — Entering God’s presence with little preparation, no posture of reverence, and no sense of awe.
  • • A lax attitude toward spiritual disciplines — Prayer becomes an afterthought. Bible reading feels optional. God’s presence becomes background noise.
  • • Being flippant with His name — Using the name of Jesus carelessly instead of treating it as holy.
  • • Diminished reverence — The deep sense of holy awe begins to fade. God starts to feel ordinary, manageable, and predictable.

Jude was not writing to outsiders; he was writing to believers, people of faith who loved God, gathered together, and worshiped Him. Yet he warns that disrespect had crept in unnoticed. The grace of God was being twisted into permission for casual living.

The same danger exists today. When we become so comfortable with God’s forgiveness that we stop caring about what pleases Him, we begin moving toward the attitude Jude warns against. This does not necessarily make us false teachers, but it can lead us into the same error: treating God’s grace as something to be exploited rather than treasured.

We can attend church every Sunday, quote Scripture, and still have hearts that have quietly stopped trembling before Him.

Familiarity, when left unchecked, trains us to see what is sacred as ordinary. What we do not respect, we eventually lose.

Scripture and history are filled with examples of people who grew familiar with God’s holiness and suffered the consequences.Think of the disciples asleep in Gethsemane, not evil, not rebellious, simply comfortable enough to rest while Jesus agonized in prayer. Think of Uzzah, who reached out his hand to steady the ark. It was not an act of malice. It was a reflex born from familiarity. Yet it revealed a failure to honor God’s holiness.

We serve a God who is both Father and Fire. He is near, yet holy. He welcomes us into His presence, yet calls us to remove our sandals because the ground on which we stand is sacred.

Pause and Ask Yourself

• When was the last time I truly felt awe in God’s presence, not just emotion, but holy reverence?

• Have I been treating God’s name lightly, prayer casually, or worship carelessly?

• What practical steps can I take this week to restore reverence in my walk with God?

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for the times I have made You ordinary. Forgive me for treating Your name lightly, Your presence carelessly, and Your grace cheaply.Restore in me the fear of the Lord, not a fear of terror, but a reverent and trembling love. Teach me to be intimate with You while never losing sight of Your holiness. Help me never to mistake closeness for casualness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
