Beware the Serpent's Influence and Discernment About Deceptive Character and Spiritual Warfare
The Bible teaches believers to exercise discernment. Scripture warns that some people deceive, manipulate, betray, and oppose God's truth. At the same time, it also teaches that only God knows the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). Therefore, Christians should be careful not to assume that every difficult or dishonest person is "an agent of Satan." Instead, believers are called to recognize sinful patterns, test everything by God's Word, and respond with wisdom, truth, and prayer.
Signs of Serpent-Like Character in the Bible
-
They are deceitful. The serpent first deceived Eve through lies and subtle questioning (Genesis 3:1-5). A deceitful person hides truth to manipulate others.
-
They twist God's Word. Satan distorted God's command in Eden and later misused Scripture when tempting Jesus (Matthew 4:1-11). Those who knowingly twist Scripture for selfish purposes should be approached with discernment.
-
They are habitual liars. Jesus said that the devil "is a liar and the father of lies" (John 8:44). Persistent dishonesty reflects behavior that opposes God's truth.
-
They secretly betray others. Judas Iscariot outwardly appeared faithful while secretly planning betrayal (Luke 22:3-6). Hidden betrayal destroys trust.
-
They sow division. Proverbs 6:16-19 says God hates one who sows discord among brothers. They stir conflict, gossip, and confusion.
-
They flatter to manipulate. Romans 16:18 warns about those who deceive people through smooth speech and flattering words.
-
They envy and seek another person's downfall. Cain's jealousy led to murder (Genesis 4:3-8). Envy often produces destructive actions.
-
They accuse and slander. Revelation 12:10 calls Satan the accuser of the brethren. False accusations damage reputations and relationships.
-
They are hypocritical. Jesus rebuked religious leaders who appeared righteous outwardly but were corrupt inwardly (Matthew 23:27-28).
-
They refuse correction. Proverbs 29:1 warns that one who repeatedly rejects correction faces ruin.
-
They manipulate for selfish gain. False teachers exploit others through greed (2 Peter 2:1-3).
-
They delight in evil rather than repentance. Isaiah 5:20 warns against calling evil good and good evil.
-
They oppose righteousness. Like Elymas the sorcerer, they attempt to turn others away from God's truth (Acts 13:8-10).
-
They remain unrepentant. Romans 2:5 warns against hard and unrepentant hearts that reject God's mercy.
-
Their lives consistently produce evil fruit. Jesus taught, "You will recognize them by their fruits" (Matthew 7:15-20). A pattern of unrepentant sin reveals the character of a person's life.
Biblical Examples The serpent in Eden (Genesis 3) used deception to tempt Eve. Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus for money (Matthew 26:14-16). The Pharisees often displayed hypocrisy while rejecting Christ (Matthew 23). Elymas the sorcerer opposed the gospel and sought to mislead others (Acts 13:8-10). These examples show actions and attitudes that Scripture condemns. However, the Bible also shows that God can transform sinners who repent, as seen in the lives of Paul and many others.
A Biblical Response Believers are instructed to: Test the spirits (1 John 4:1). Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves (Matthew 10:16). Avoid those who persist in divisive, unrepentant behavior after appropriate warnings (Titus 3:10-11). Pray for those who oppose the truth, hoping they will come to repentance (2 Timothy 2:24-26). The New Testament emphasizes resisting the devil (James 4:7), but it does not instruct believers to declare that specific people have a "snake spirit." God alone perfectly knows a person's heart.
Prayer Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, fill me with Your Holy Spirit and grant me wisdom, discernment, and courage. Expose every lie, deception, manipulation, and scheme of the enemy that seeks to draw me or my family away from Your truth.
I resist the devil, and I submit myself to You according to James 4:7. Let every influence of deceit, temptation, and spiritual darkness be broken by the authority of Jesus Christ. Guard my heart from bitterness, fear, and revenge, and help me respond with truth, holiness, and love.
Lead those who are deceived to repentance and freedom through Christ. May my life bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit, and may I walk in the wisdom, purity, and righteousness of Your Word. In Jesus' name, Amen.
