The Reality TV Persona Not the Character on The Game

Out of boredom and availability on YouTube, I watched the Season 16 premiere of the Real Housewives of Atlanta. I haven’t watched a full episode in years. The new cast intrigued me, so I decided to watch. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it.

The ladies all seem to bring different things to the table. Of course, there’s a lot of pretentiousness and superficial bonding over looks and Zodiac signs, but that’s the mindset of Atlanta socialites.

I want to take this time to hone in on Drew Sidora. She is an actress turned singer turned reality TV star who is currently going through a divorce from her husband, Ralph Pittman. Ralph is currently living in the basement of the house they bought during her first season on the show in 2020. Ralph closed on the house and moved without Drew’s attendance and is now living in the basement. Karma. But how did Drew even allow Ralph to make those moves without her?

Well, here comes my analysis of Drew.

Drew has a weak, needy, immature, and at times, naive mindset. She means well, she tries, but she just can’t keep up with those around her and is also vulnerable to their validation. Something must have happened to Drew in her younger days for her to have this mindset. Certainly, being married to Ralph, with his mental and emotional abuse all those years, was not helpful. He preyed on a weak mind.

For my Drew analysis, I’ll start with the superficial stuff because this is an Atlanta housewife. During Drew’s first season on the show, it was evident she was trying hard to look like she fit in. She had chefs on deck at the house whenever the cameras were rolling. She had multiple assistants. She wore the printed label outfit to let you know she was wearing designer clothes. Her wigs were horrendous. She was even the butt of jokes on the show for a wig she wore. Then, when she did the Body by Drew endeavor, the marketing and execution were very elementary for someone who claims to have multiple assistants and chefs on rotation 24/7. Turns out she was more like an ambassador than the owner of the operation. Plus, the website never worked. She was trying to be a big girl but didn’t have the proper understanding or execution skills to do so. And when it came time to do the exercises, Drew looked like a 4-year-old trying to keep up with adults at her program.

Whew!

This brings me to Season 16, Episode 1. I noticed three different times where Drew leaned in on someone supporting her. Now, either she is fake and phony or she really doesn’t understand true support and will get her feelings hurt.

1. During a scene, Drew is on the phone with Porsha. Porsha is giving Drew cliche advice and instead of Drew responding to the content of what Porsha said, like most people would, she says, “See…that’s all I need…your support has always been everything.” Granted, the conversation may have been edited to just that small amount (because it was provided in the episode as a flashback scene), but “your support has always been everything,” is a bit much. I found that to be an immature response from a needy person. If that person’s support is so important to you, why is it on speaker phone for your glam squad and Bravo cameras to capture…all while your sister is holding your hand? That’s the fake and phony part. Hold that note because this will circle back to Porsha.
2. During the introduction of the relation between Drew and Angela Oakley, we learn that they just met about three years ago. The scene shows Drew confiding to Angela that she is going through a lot at the moment and suggests they lean on each other. Now, from the way Angela and Drew spoke of each other in this introduction, I didn’t get a sincere friendship was in place, so why was Drew suggesting they lean on one another? Angela’s response was in a joking manner, which suggested to me that it was not a serious conversation for her, and thus she and Drew are not friends on that level. Again, another indicator of Drew’s need for support and attention.
3. In her conversation with Kenya, Drew says that Dennis McKinley, the father of Porsha William’s daughter, has been her “angel on Earth” as her music producer while going through her divorce. She says there were days she didn’t want to get out of bed but having a studio session made her want to get up. Drew is immaturely giving Dennis the credit that the music should be given. It is the music, as the outlet, that gave her the desire to get up. Now, if it was not about the music and was about Dennis, then she should just state that his friendship has helped her get up out of bed. Plus, I think she’s lying about Dennis because out of all the music producers in Atlanta, she chooses Dennis. No one knew Dennis produced music. We knew him for hot dogs, parties, and being Porsha’s baby’s daddy. Drew, with her immature, needy self, seems like the type to date the ex of someone she admires because it boosts her ego to know she can pull the same man as the woman she admires and who she sees gets attention from men. Don’t forget, Drew said Porsha’s support has been “everything” to her. She was likely over-embellishing Porsha’s support like she is Dennis’. I think Drew gaslights people into friendship like Ralph gaslit her on a number of things during their marriage. Drew takes attention and molds it into friendship. Regardless, if Porsha’s support is “everything,” to her, then why would she be so close with Dennis and Porsha not know?

Chile…Drew is a case study. I led this article with the picture that says “We see what we want.” I think Drew sees the support she wants in anyone who looks like they could be supportive. If you show her attention with some work or you’re from the same town, she sees an opportunity and will make that person what they are not. It reminds me of a lesson I learned in the book, Crucial Conversations: people don’t make you feel a certain way, it is the story you tell yourself that makes you feel that way and that story is based on your knowledge and past experiences that may have nothing to do with that person. That’s Drew…and she seems like she would be exhausting.
