How to Start a Business When You Have Almost Nothing
A few nights ago, I watched a YouTube video by Alex Hormozi titled “I’m Broke, What Business Do I Start?”

Youtube Alex Hormozi
It wasn’t the usual motivational hype or get-rich-quick formula. It was real. Simple. Direct. And honestly, it shook me a bit.
Instead of just watching and moving on, I decided to sit with it, reflect, and write down what I learned — and now I’m sharing it with you. Because if you’re also broke, confused, or stuck in the “where do I even start?” loop, this might be exactly what you need too.
So this isn’t a guide from someone who’s made it. This is me, learning with you, breaking down what Hormozi said, and turning it into steps we can actually act on.
Lesson 1: Start With “Who,” Not “What”
Most of us (me included) start by asking, “What kind of business should I build?”
But in the video, Hormozi says: “Don’t start with what. Start with WHO.”
Who can you help? Who do you understand deeply? Who were you before you figured something out?
This flipped a switch in my brain. Instead of trying to invent a fancy new product, I started thinking: who am I uniquely positioned to serve?
It made things feel a lot simpler.
Lesson 2: Your Past = Your Business Idea
Hormozi said something that stuck with me: “Pick a group you used to be a part of.”
If you’ve ever gone through a painful or messy process — and came out the other side — that experience becomes your offer.
Maybe you used to be broke and figured out how to budget. Maybe you struggled with fitness, freelance, burnout, heartbreak. Doesn’t matter. What matters is, you’ve walked that path.
And someone out there is still stuck at the beginning.
That’s who you can serve.
Lesson 3: Sell the Result, Not the Service
This was another “whoa” moment for me.
People don’t pay for time. They pay for transformation.
Hormozi gave this example: Don’t say, “I’ll coach you for an hour.” Say, “I’ll help you land your first client in 7 days.”
It made me rethink how I talk about what I can offer. It’s not about what I do — it’s about what they get.
Lesson 4: You Don’t Need Money — You Need Proof
This was probably the most freeing part. Hormozi basically says:
You don’t need capital to start. You need someone willing to pay you to solve a problem.
That’s it.
You don’t need a website. Not even a logo. Just one person. One result. One win.
Then? Use that proof to get another. And another.
This made me realize I’ve been hiding behind “planning” because I was scared to actually offer something.
Lesson 5: Action Beats Ideas Every Time
Hormozi ends the video reminding us: waiting keeps you broke.
It’s easy to think we need to figure everything out first. But we don’t. We need to move. Offer. Learn. Adjust.
He says clarity comes after action, not before. And that hit hard.
So now, I’m starting small. Offering help where I can. Seeing what sticks. Not trying to build an empire — just trying to build momentum.
Final Thoughts: We’re Learning This Together
I’m not writing this as an expert. I’m writing this as someone in the middle of the mess — learning, testing, failing, repeating.
But if there’s one thing I took away from that 7-minute video, it’s this:
You’re not too broke to start. You’re too afraid to serve.
So here’s my plan: pick someone I can help, offer something simple, and focus on real results — not perfection.
If you’re in the same boat, let’s keep learning and building side by side.
If you’re also learning, building, or running something from scratch, hit follow — let’s grow through this messy, magical journey together.
