Who Is Jawed Karim?

I cannot stop daydreaming about him, and no, it’s definitely not because he has the coolest dating profile ever. It is because that dating profile featured one post, only about 30 seconds long, and the whole world missed it. I mean, with 300 million views you would think the guy would have found a date by now. It does not seem that way. He has not taken down his profile.

Sometime around 2005, Jawed and some of his friends decided to create what would become an internet phenomenon. “Me at the Zoo.” It is a short clip featuring the man himself describing what the day was like at the zoo. He continued briefly to explain that elephants have really long trunks. It was quite informative.

Upon visiting this digital landmark, I witnessed a few different things. One, it has since been upscaled into 4K ultra-HD by a fan so that we can see just what it would have been like if the document were filmed two decades later in that very same moment at that very same zoo. Two, the rumor spread quickly and it never died out. Three, it was a dating profile! That last one took me a minute. I knew something was different about it. I have never seen a vlogger spend 30 seconds doing anything other than forget what they were talking about.

So, this raises the question: What was this handsome, young man doing on the internet? Was he seeking world domination? Did he plan on building the world’s biggest peer-to-peer video-sharing network? Was the end goal really just to find a cute girl to go to the movies with next Friday? The answer to all of these questions is — most definitely — no. YouTube was founded, much earlier than the creation of “Me at the Zoo,” in the year 2003.

It just sat there like that for quite some time. If profile features were available so early into conception, I doubt they were used very often. No one really knew what to do with it. I tend to find myself wondering if it was some kind of boring class project! Odds are, somebody had the random idea to go to the zoo and we were gifted with the first independent masterpiece collected on a handheld camcorder.

I can only imagine the flurry of emotions that come with leaving the first explorative footprints in cyberspace. Sealed in the vacuum of virtual reality is a young man with a big imagination and some extra film storage. He has been the source of conspiracy regarding his separation from the estate, and he has been reenvisioned with a few extra pixels to spare just for good measure. If you are familiar with the old saying, he struck gold. Powerful stuff! Do you think you would have done it any differently?
