From 2001, when it was spun off from Bristol-Myers, Zimmer, as a designer, developer, and manufacturer of orthopedic products, to 2015, when it acquired Biomet and became Zimmer Biomet, to today, where it is one of the world’s largest medical supply companies, with close to 20,000 employees and a valuation of nearly $20B, the following are the CEOs of Zimmer Biomet.

Ray Elliott (1997–2001 & 2001–2007)

Ray Elliott joined Zimmer (then a Bristol Myers Squibb subsidiary) as president in 1997. He led the spin-off and NYSE listing in 2001 and became Zimmer’s first CEO in March 2001. Under his leadership, Zimmer began life as a newly independent public company. He established a foundation for global expansion and scaling the reconstructive-implant business. He led the acquisition of Centerpulse and InCentive, significantly expanding Zimmer’s portfolio and international presence. During his tenure, Zimmer’s revenue grew from $1B to nearly $4B.

David Dvorak (2007–2017)

In 2007, Zimmer was navigating a series of regulatory and compliance challenges. In response, the board promoted its Chief Legal Officer, David Dvorak, to the CEO role. Dvorak’s legal expertise helped restore order, while his strategic push expanded Zimmer’s footprint through multiple tuck-in acquisitions, including ExtraOrtho and Synvasive, and ultimately the transformational purchase of Biomet. The $14B merger, completed in 2015, created the modern Zimmer Biomet and positioned the company as a global force in musculoskeletal healthcare.

During Dvorak’s tenure, revenue grew from $4B to nearly $8B, as Zimmer entered new markets, including sports medicine, extremities, and foot & ankle. However, the integration challenges and commercial complexities introduced following the merger wiped out the company’s entire operating income. Ultimately, in July 2017, just two years after the deal closed, investor pressure mounted, prompting Zimmer to announce Dvorak’s departure. Dan Florin, then CFO, stepped in as interim CEO while the board sought new leadership.

Bryan Hanson (2017–2023)

In December 2017, Zimmer turned to Bryan Hanson to reset execution and rebuild credibility. Hanson focused on reliability, operational discipline, and reshaping the company’s portfolio. The spinoff of spine and dental assets into ZimVie in 2022 was a good example of this. He also pushed Zimmer into new digital and robotic initiatives. In recognition of his leadership, the Board appointed him as Chairman in 2021.

Despite these efforts, Zimmer struggled to restore margins. The pandemic’s shock and its supply chain disruption made the situation even more difficult. As a result, Zimmer’s market story remained unchanged, and investors remained dissatisfied. This was highlighted at the 2022 shareholder meeting, where the support for the executive compensation plan dropped sharply, from 93% in 2021 to 54%. Ultimately, in Aug 2023, Bryan Hanson departed to lead the 3M healthcare division, which was later spun off, becoming Solventum.

Ivan Tornos (2023 — Present)

In Aug 2023, Ivan Tornos, formerly COO and long-time executive, became the new CEO of Zimmer. Since his appointment, he has continued to focus on improving operational discipline, restoring margins, driving growth, and refreshing the company’s brand.
