I Built a Free Passport Photo App After 20 Years of Running a Photo Studio

For 20 years, I’ve been running a photo studio. In that time, I’ve taken tens of thousands of ID photos and checked thousands of specifications. Every customer had the same struggle: Is the background right? Is my face the right size? Will this get rejected?

I realized most of this process could be automated. So I built IDPASS.

What is IDPASS?

IDPASS is a free iOS app that takes a photo from your phone and crops it to official ID photo specifications — passport, visa, driver’s license, and more.

It’s not an AI photo generator. It takes YOUR photo and formats it to meet the exact requirements of the document you need.

How It Works

• *Step 1 — Choose your spec.** Passport, visa, or license? Which country? The app supports 200+ countries and 320+ document specs. US passport (51×51mm), Korean passport (35×45mm), Japanese residence card (24×30mm) — they’re all different.

• *Step 2 — Pick your photo.** Any front-facing photo works. A selfie, a photo someone took of you — it doesn’t matter.

• *Step 3 — Background removal + auto crop.** The app removes the background, applies the required color (white, blue, gray), and positions your face according to the spec. It measures your eye position, chin, and crown of head in real-time, and warns you if anything is out of range.

• *Step 4 — Save.** Done. It’s in your camera roll, ready for submission or printing.

What Makes IDPASS Different

Here’s something most people don’t know: official specifications measure face height from chin to the crown of the skull — not the top of the hair.

Most competing apps get this wrong. They measure to the top of the hair, which leads to rejected photos. We’ve filed a patent on our approach to accurately detect the cranial vertex.

IDPASS also shows you real-time measurements and lets you manually adjust the crown position and face ratio if needed. You’ll see warnings for any values outside the accepted range.

Privacy: Your Photos Never Leave Your Phone

This matters more than people think. IDPASS processes everything on-device:
