PRSSA Chapter at UNR is Small but Mighty

Lexi Feldman reports from the group’s most recent event to discuss digital content playbooks.

Like many students at the University of Nevada, Reno, getting involved on campus can be challenging. Finding the right club, organization, or extracurricular activity can feel daunting and intimidating.

On an early Wednesday evening at the Reynolds School of Journalism, students pile into room 216.

They are attending the Digital Content Playbook programming event for the Public Relations Student Society of America, also known as PRSSA.

Third-year journalism student Vice President of Professional Development, Aly Marimberga says she was thrilled with the turnout.

“It’s great because I get to participate in programs like tonight’s digital content playbook,” Marimberga said. “We had a great time networking with those interested in PRSSA, and we hosted a really engaging Instagram reels workshop. The response from our attendees was incredibly positive and it was rewarding to see their enthusiasm in their creativity throughout all the work they did today.”

PRSSA attracts the interest of many journalism students every year, even fourth-year students who are about to graduate. Camille Flye, Vice President of Membership and a senior set to graduate this December, joined PRSSA despite initially knowing little about the organization.

“My biggest advice for prospective students seeking to get involved on campus and in PRSSA is to just say yes to everything,” Flye said. “Say yes to all the programs and all the events that you possibly can because the more exposure you get the more people you’ll meet, and the more opportunities that you’ll open yourself up to.”

During the digital content playbook event, members were paired up with a partner, and tasked to create marketing content for various social media platforms.

Members were paired up with unfamiliar faces. This allowed everyone to network and connect with new members.

With a network of over 400 professional and student chapters in the United States, PRSSA enables members to network with one another, and have exclusive leadership opportunities.

One prospective member was Demetri Vandarakis, a third-year university student.

He heard about the club through social media. Balancing multiple commitments has made it difficult for him to get involved.

“It’s an excellent way to get involved and for students to interact with each other about public relations,” Vandarakis said. “It really puts a testament to how important it is to be a university student and what it means to be well-spoken and to convey yourself among your peers.”

As PRSSA Nevada continues to grow, its programming events, like the Digital Content Playbook, are providing students with the tools, connections, and experiences they need to thrive in the ever-evolving field of public relations.

With opportunities to learn, network, and lead, PRSSA remains a key resource for future communication professionals at the University of Nevada, Reno.
