Abstract

In this article we will see about the information got from RTI. The suburbanrailway system in Chennai plays a crucial role in urban mobility, servingthousands of commuters daily. This article analyzes the frequency andtiming of EMU/MEMU suburban train services in Chennai based on datafrom an RTI response. The study categorizes train operations into peak andnon-peak hours, highlighting the frequency of trains on major routes,including Avadi, Gummidipundi, Tambaram, Chengalpet, and MRTS (MSB– VLCY). The findings provide insights into the efficiency of suburbanrailway operations and their impact on urban transportation.Introduction

The Southern Railway, Chennai Division, has provided details on the frequency of

EMU/MEMU suburban trains in Chennai as of January 2, 2025, in response to an RTI

query. The information, enclosed in an official response dated February 11, 2025, offers

insights into train frequencies across key routes during peak and non-peak hours.

Chennai’s suburban railway network is a lifeline for the city’s commuters, connecting

various parts of the metropolitan region. The frequency of trains determines the ease of

commuting, especially during peak hours when passenger demand is at its highest. The

RTI response provides structured data on train frequency for different routes as of

January 2, 2025. This article examines the train schedules, distinguishing between peak

and non-peak hours, to evaluate service efficiency.

Analysis of Train Frequencies

1. Avadi Route

Peak Hours:

From MMC (07:30–09:30) and Towards MMC (08:00–10:00): Frequency of 10 to 15

minutes.

From MMC (17:30–19:30) and Towards MMC (18:00–20:00): Frequency of 10 to 15

minutes.

Non-Peak Hours: Frequency of 15 to 20 minutes.

2. Gummidipundi Route

Peak Hours:

From MMC (07:30–10:00) and Towards MMC (08:00–10:00): Frequency of 20 to 25

minutes.From MMC (17:30–19:30) and Towards MMC (18:00–20:00): Frequency of 30

minutes.

Non-Peak Hours: Frequency of 45 minutes.

3. Chennai Beach to Tambaram/Chengalpet Route

Peak Hours:

From MSB (07:40–10:30) and Towards MSB (07:30–09:30): Frequency of 8 to 10

minutes.

From MSB (17:00–20:00) and Towards MSB (17:00–20:00): Frequency of 8 to 10

minutes.

Non-Peak Hours: Frequency of 15 minutes.

4. Tambaram to Chengalpet Route

Peak Hours:

From TBM (05:30–05:45): Frequency of 10 to 15 minutes.

From CGL (04:00–09:05): Frequency of 15 to 20 minutes.

From TBM (15:40–21:00): Frequency of 20 minutes.

From CGL (16:05–21:30): Frequency of 20 minutes.

Non-Peak Hours: Frequency of 40 minutes.

5. MRTS (MSB — VLCY) Route

Peak Hours:From MSB (07:00–11:00) and From VLCY (06:15–10:15): Frequency of 20 minutes.

Non-Peak Hours: Frequency of 25 to 30 minutes.

Conclusion

The suburban railway network in Chennai is well-structured to accommodate peak-hour

passenger demand, with train frequencies ranging from 8 to 30 minutes depending on

the route. The busiest routes, such as Chennai Beach to Tambaram/Chengalpet, have

higher frequencies of 8 to 10 minutes during peak hours, ensuring a smooth flow of

passengers. However, non-peak hours witness longer intervals, particularly on routes

like Gummidipundi and Chengalpet, where frequencies extend up to 40–45 minutes.
