“If you’re mad, clean something”
This is not presented as a suggestion. This is a command.
You’ll be standing there, mid-rant, explaining why you’re justified in your rage, and a Southern relative will look at you like you’re a toddler and say, “Go clean the kitchen.”
Rude. Dismissive. Feels illegal.
And then you do it. You start wiping counters like you’re in a revenge montage, slamming cabinet doors, aggressively reorganizing things nobody asked you to touch.
And somewhere in the middle of scrubbing a stove eye, your brain just… stops spiraling.
By the time you’re done, your house is clean and your problem feels about 40 percent less dramatic.
You weren’t healed. You were distracted into stability.
2. “Don’t grocery shop hungry unless you hate your bank account”
This one sounds obvious until you ignore it and ruin your own life.
You walk into the store thinking you’ll just grab a few things. Suddenly you’re leaving with twelve snacks, three desserts, and something you can’t even identify but felt emotionally necessary at the time.
Southern people will warn you like it’s a financial crime.
“Eat before you go in there.”
Because they already know. Hunger turns you into a chaotic decision-maker with zero impulse control and a cart full of regrets.
And every time you ignore this advice, you pay for it. Literally.
3. “Air it out before you decide it’s ruined”
This applies to clothes, houses, moods, and honestly, your entire personality.
Something smells off? Air it out.
Room feels weird? Open a window.
You’re in a bad mood? Step outside before you start making life-altering decisions.
Southern people believe fresh air fixes more than therapy, and while that’s debatable, it does stop you from immediately spiraling into “everything is terrible and I should burn my life down.”
Half the time, you just needed oxygen and a minute to calm down.
Not a full crisis.
4. “Put it on a plate”
This one sounds so small, but it will expose you immediately.
You’re standing in the kitchen eating straight out of a bag like a raccoon with Wi-Fi, telling yourself it’s not a real meal.
A Southern woman will walk by, look at you once, and say, “Put it on a plate.”
And suddenly you’re forced to confront what you’re doing.
Because when you plate it, you see it. You slow down. You eat like a person instead of a goblin hovering over a pantry.
And weirdly enough, you end up eating less and feeling more normal.
It’s not about the plate. It’s about restoring a tiny bit of dignity.
5. “If it can wait till morning, let it”
This is the Southern version of “stop making decisions at night when your brain is dramatic and unwell.”
Everything feels worse after dark.
Your problems get louder. Your thoughts get weirder. You start drafting texts you should absolutely not send and considering life changes that make no sense in daylight.
A Southern relative will shut that down immediately.
“Go to bed. If it still matters in the morning, deal with it then.”
And 9 times out of 10, you wake up and realize you were about to emotionally ruin your own life over something that barely holds up in sunlight.
Nighttime is a liar. They’ve known that for years.
it’s not fancy, but it works
Southern advice doesn’t come with a podcast, a morning routine, or a 12-step system.
It’s just blunt, slightly judgmental observations that somehow cut straight through your nonsense.
No overthinking. No over-explaining.
Just “eat something,” “go outside,” “clean your house,” and “go to sleep before you make it worse.”
And honestly? That’s about 80 percent of life handled right there.
