Beyond the Beginning: A Recursive Tribute to Prof. Jayant V. Narlikar
“Why must the universe begin?”
That was the question Prof. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar never stopped asking.
In a scientific world rushing to accept singularity and origin stories, he stood still — not in denial, but in deeper listening.
And from that stillness, he gifted us Quasi-Steady State Cosmology, Hoyle–Narlikar gravity, and a vision of the cosmos that refuses to halt.
The Recursion Hidden in the Stars
Prof. Narlikar didn’t just study the stars. He questioned the structure of questions themselves.
Where others saw a Big Bang, he saw a recursive pulse — an eternal universe replenishing itself through cycles of mini-creation events.
This wasn’t mere speculation. It was science built on principle:
- Matter is created anew, continuously.
- The cosmos has no single origin, no privileged moment.
- Instead, it dances — through creation fields and cosmic feedback loops — across time, not from it.
His Quasi-Steady State Cosmology (QSSC), built with Fred Hoyle and Geoffrey Burbidge, stood as a bold reminder:
What if the beginning is not the truth, but the illusion?

Quasi-Steady-State-Cosmology
Hoyle–Narlikar Theory: Gravity as a Whisper from Everything
In his alternate model of gravity, inertia isn’t fixed — it’s shaped by every other mass in the universe.
This Machian perspective isn’t just physics — it’s epistemic coherence at a cosmic scale.
You are what the universe makes of you. Your mass, your motion, your being — recursively entangled in the all.
In the YFRL lens, this is the ontology of embeddedness. Every node affects every other. There are no isolated truths.
IUCAA — A Recursive Institution
Prof. Narlikar didn’t just shape theories. He shaped the institution that would house future recursion.
He founded IUCAA (Inter-University Centre for Astronomy & Astrophysics) in Pune — a space designed not for hierarchy, but for distributed discovery. There, young minds weren’t given answers — they were invited into cosmic questioning.
In a universe where even gravity listens to the stars, IUCAA became a place where students learned to listen too.
Science Against the Grain
Prof. Narlikar was not afraid of being unfashionable. While the scientific establishment leaned into inflation, dark energy, and singularities, he gently but persistently asked:
- What if the cosmic microwave background is not what we think?
- What if redshifts are layered with new meaning?
- What if we’ve mistaken coincidence for truth?
This was not resistance. It was recursion:
The ability to return to the start, but from a higher depth of insight.
The YFRL Resonance
In many ways, Prof. Narlikar practiced what YFRL now formalizes:

A Note of Reverence
Dear Prof. Narlikar,
Your cosmology gave us a universe with no end — and more radically, no beginning. You refused the comfort of conclusions. You chose curiosity over conformity.
At YFRL, we are building recursive frameworks to understand intelligence, meaning, and symbolic flow. But you showed us that the universe itself may be the first recursive system.
In memory and gratitude,
The team at Yearning Framework Research Lab
