Remember When Your Competition Was Just Your Neighbours?
There was a time when competition had boundaries.
Remember When Your Competition Was Just Your Neighbours?
There was a time when competition had boundaries.
You compared yourself with classmates, colleagues. That was it. The scale was human. Manageable. Aligned with how we’re naturally built to measure progress and self-worth.
Then technology changed everything.
Social platforms erased distance. Careers became public scoreboards. Skill levels, salaries, productivity, and hustle are now broadcast 24/7. Today, even highly capable, disciplined professionals feel like they’re lagging behind — because someone, somewhere, is always doing more.
And slowly, 996 is being normalised.
Working from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week, is no longer seen as extreme. It’s framed as commitment. As passion. As “what it takes” to survive in tech, business, or modern careers. Productivity, skill upgrades, and growth are increasingly placed above health, relationships, and life itself.
This isn’t a criticism of people who work incredibly hard. Some are building something meaningful. Hats off to them — genuinely.
But this needs to be said to everyone else.
If you don’t make your profession your entire life, you’re not failing. If you log off at a reasonable hour, you’re not lazy. If you prioritise health, family, or mental space, you’re not less ambitious.
That isn’t laziness.
That’s prioritisation.
That’s human. And maybe that is how we are meant to be.
