Defining Professional Standards for Independent Market Recherche Practice

Introducing the MRCA Association

A Practitioner-Focused Professional Framework

The global market research industry has undergone significant structural change over the past decade. Independent consultants and hybrid practitioners now play a central role in research design, execution, and strategic advisory work across regions and methodologies.

Despite this evolution, professional recognition frameworks have largely remained organisation-centric, leaving individual practitioners without clear, shared reference points.

MRCA has been established to address this structural gap.

Purpose and positioning

MRCA is a professional association focused on individual market research practitioners, including independent consultants and hybrid professionals operating across multiple organisational contexts.

Its purpose is to define a clear, neutral, and internationally applicable professional framework at the practitioner level — distinct from agency representation or commercial accreditation models.

MRCA does not position itself as a trade body or a marketplace. It does not represent organisations, suppliers, or corporate interests.

Core principles

The association is built around three foundational principles:

1. Clear standards

MRCA defines shared professional reference points covering competence, ethics, and professional conduct, applicable across methodologies and markets.

2. Individual recognition

Recognition and certification apply to practitioners, not organisations. This reflects the reality of modern research careers, which increasingly span multiple clients, employers, and geographies.

3. Flexible practice

The framework is designed to accommodate diverse professional models while maintaining consistent expectations of quality and accountability.

Relationship to the existing ecosystem

MRCA is not designed to replace or compete with established industry bodies. Instead, it complements the existing ecosystem by addressing an area that has historically remained under-structured: practitioner-level professional recognition.

The association’s scope is intentionally international, reflecting the cross-border nature of contemporary market research work.

Current status

MRCA is currently in an early development phase. Its governance, standards framework, and certification mechanisms are being progressively structured with an emphasis on clarity, neutrality, and long-term credibility.

As the initiative evolves, documentation and updates are made publicly available.
