Blackout / All Clear by Connie Willis — “DO YOUR BIT”

Blackout and All Clear are a sci-fi duology written by the American author Connie Willis in 2010. Blackout was published by Spectra on February 2, 2010, while its sequel and concluding volume, All Clear, was released as a separate book on October 19 of the same year. Together, the two novels won the 2010 Nebula Award for Best Novel, the 2011 Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel, and the 2011 Hugo Award for Best Novel.

About the names of the books

Here, Blackout does not simply mean a “power outage.” In the context of the novel, it refers to the strict blackout regulations imposed in Britain during World War II, especially in London. All visible light had to be extinguished at night so that German bombers could not locate their targets. Families were required to seal their windows with heavy curtains, and even the slightest light leaking outside could be reported. In a deeper sense, the title also reflects the emotional darkness of wartime Britain — a period when people could hardly see any light at the end of the tunnel.

All Clear, as the phrase literally suggests, refers to the signal that an air raid has ended and normal life may resume. At the same time, it quietly symbolizes how the protagonists eventually find their own paths forward and step into the future.

Protagonists

The novel opens in a laboratory in Oxford in the year 2060. From the very beginning, Connie Willis throws readers straight into chaos without mercy. Amid the confusion and overlapping conversations, the three protagonists gradually emerge one after another:

• Polly Sebastian/Mary Kent (real name: Polly Churchill)
• Eileen O’Reilly (real name: Merope Ward)
• Mike Davis/Ernest Worthing (real name: Michael Davies)

The three protagonists are historians as well as time travelers. Their missions are to travel back to several symbolic moments of World War II Britain — including the Blitz, the evacuation of children, and the Dunkirk evacuation — in order to observe how ordinary people lived through the war and reacted to it.

My Assessment

My heart broke at Eileen’s final decision to stay, and Mike’s death affected me deeply as well. Connie Willis handles these emotional moments with remarkable delicacy and sincerity, especially when portraying the pain of separation between friends.

The characters throughout the novel embody the brighter side of human nature: they don’t flinch at setbacks in life, support one another altruistically through hard times. What moved me most was the courage they showed in simply doing their bits during the war — no matter how small or insignificant their contributions might seem.

Another impressive aspect of the novel is Willis’s astonishing attention to historical detail. She describes the air raids with such precision — from which city was bombed to the exact dates and times — that one can clearly see the enormous amount of historical research behind the story.

I appreciate her viewing the war from the angle of the “contemps”. From countless small details, we can feel that not only those people and incidents recorded in history books are heroes, but also the ordinary civilians. In every air raid, the civilians taking shelter in Anderson shelters and tube stations simply wait to be blown away. The courage they show under the endless threat of death, and the resilience required to accept the deaths of their loved ones and still move on, are no less remarkable than those of the soldiers on the front lines.
