AI design … It’s coming to Marching Music

I was amazed.

And then I started to think, how long until AI handles music and visual design for marching bands and drum corps? I wasn't thinking of the best of the best or a groundbreaking show for the next decade, but rather good, solid, well-crafted, and workable programs. Indeed, if enough information and videos were fed into AI, it would not take all that long to create a “10-minute program featuring the music of Leonard Bernstein” … ( for example)

Well, before I got too far down the road, I started to wonder if there was someone way ahead of my aged thought process.

Music, Drill, Costuming … there is much that can be simplified, that is for sure.

Then there is this …

So, if Sadie Winters is possible, how long until we can have a first-class visual design for a top 10 corps? or for a top 5 band in Texas?

It will not be all that long, or so it seems. And, here is what is interesting? Maybe? If I can get the design for my band for a total of $10,000, why do I have to pay $100,000 to have the names and work from the best designers? Is this a way to level the playing field?

Think about drum corps? As it now stands, the probability of #10 rising to #1 over even a decade is not very good.

As I have pointed out in other writings, the variations in corps allotments for education can range from $1,000,000 or more to $100,000. How does one ever make up for that variance? And how many GREAT visual designers are there in the world of marching music? How many arrangers are out there who can, with comfort and certainty, create band arrangements from symphonic, jazz, and rock originals, with relative ease and expertise? Is money the deciding factor on who does well and who does not do quite as well?

Now, students must be able to perform at a high level, and the teaching staff should be of the highest caliber. That said, the chances of finding a 23-year-old who can lead a visual technique program at an elite standard of performance are way more probable than finding the most fantastic visual designer to come into the activity in the last 15 years.

In other articles, I have compared fiscal reports between various groups and plan to continue doing so. What appears to be the case is that groups with a better financial position tend to perform better competitively. Add to that the ability of the students to move from one group to another ( think college sports portal), and the results for 2026 seem inevitable, give or take a placing or two.

More later, but I hope you had the time to take a look at the Tilly Norwood video. It makes you stop. Whoever thought that when we were young, something like this would be possible? Not me :-)
