I Am Becoming Someone I Didn’t Plan For (My Story)

For a long time, I had a clear picture of the adult I thought I would become.

She had direction. Her life was not perfect but it made sense. I thought I would grow into someone I could look at and say, “Yes. That’s exactly who I wanted to be.”

A big part of that picture was becoming a doctor. Not just any doctor. I wanted to be a surgeon. That dream stayed with me for years. It shaped the way I saw my future and the goals I set for myself.

Then 2020 came, and life shifted in a way I never expected. I got sick. At first, it felt like something temporary, just a pause before I continued with my plans. But that sickness became a turning point. Because of my health, I had to stay under medical monitoring. I could not travel abroad for university like I had hoped. Opportunities I had worked toward slowly slipped away, not because I did not try but because my body needed something different from me.

I did not just lose an opportunity. I felt like I was losing the future I had imagined for myself. The disappointment was quiet but heavy. I did not always talk about it but it sat with me. I kept thinking, “This is not how it was supposed to go.”

That is how I found myself stepping into cybersecurity.

It was not the dream I had talked about for years. It felt unfamiliar, almost like I had landed there by accident. At first, I saw it as something I was settling for because life had closed another door. But as time went on, I started learning something deeper about myself.

The reason I wanted to be a doctor was not just medicine. It was people. I wanted to help. I wanted to make someone’s life better in a real way. I wanted my work to matter. Somewhere along the way, I realized I could still do that, just differently. The world we live in now is deeply digital. People’s safety, privacy and security affect their lives more than we often realize. Protecting people does not only happen in hospitals. Sometimes it happens behind screens.

That realization did not erase the sadness but it helped me make peace with the change. Still, this new path came with its own struggles. I began dealing with imposter syndrome in ways I never had before. In my old dream, I felt certain. Here, I often felt like I was behind like everyone else understood things faster than I did. I questioned myself more than I was used to. But this journey built something in me that I did not have before.

I learned to take care of myself, not just physically, but emotionally. I learned that even with loving family and friends, I am still responsible for my own life. People can support you but they cannot live your life for you. There are battles you have to face internally, decisions you have to make quietly and strength you have to build on your own.

I also learned to let go of people and expectations that no longer fit. Not everyone who walks into your life is meant to stay. Some people come to teach you lessons about boundaries, self-worth and staying true to yourself. Losing people used to feel like failure. Now, I see it as part of growth.

The picture I once had of my future self is different now but it was not useless. It gave me direction when I needed it. It taught me to care about purpose not just titles.

Today, I am not studying to be a doctor. My path has been messy, full of detours, doubts and restarts. I have failed. I have questioned myself. I have had to adjust my dreams more than once.

But I am becoming someone real.

Someone more resilient than I planned to be.

Someone who understands that purpose can change shape and still remain meaningful.

Someone who is learning to respect her own journey even when it looks nothing like the original plan.

I am not the person I imagined years ago. But I am someone I am slowly learning to be proud of and maybe …..just maybe… that is its own kind of beautiful.
