I’m the Loudest Person in the Room. And I Desperately Need to Be Alone.

Nobody around me knows this version of me exists.

This morning I walked into the office, saw my colleagues, and smiled. And somewhere in the middle of that smile, a quiet thought appeared —

Am I acting?

I kept smiling anyway. Said good morning. Cracked a joke before I even sat down. Made three people laugh by 10am. Kept the energy alive the way I always do. Nobody noticed anything different. But I noticed. Because that smile — it wasn’t real. And I knew it the moment I made it.

This is the version of me most people know

I’m the talkative one. The one with stories. The one who walks into a room and somehow makes it warmer. I genuinely enjoy making people laugh. I genuinely care about the people around me. But here’s the part I’ve never told anyone. Every single morning when the alarm goes off, before anything else, there’s one quiet feeling —

Why is it morning again?

Not because I’m lazy. Not because I hate my job. But because morning means putting the costume back on. Morning means performing. And performing — even when you’re good at it — is exhausting in a way that’s very hard to explain.

And this is the version nobody sees

At night, when I finally get home, something shifts. I switch off the lights. I put on the songs I actually love — not background noise, but the specific songs that feel like they were made for this version of me. And I sit with myself. No performance. No stories. No smiling on demand. Just me, in my own world, finally.

“That feeling — lights off, songs on, completely alone — that’s the only time I feel like I’m not playing a character.”

When someone disturbs that moment — a light switched on, a notification, a voice — I feel genuinely irritated. Not because I hate them. But because they pulled me out of the only space where I fully exist. I have kept this to myself for as long as I can remember. The people who know me as the loud funny one have no idea this version of me is even real.

I don’t hate socialising. I hate performing it.

There’s a difference that took me a long time to understand. I don’t dislike people. I care about them. I want the room to feel alive. That part is real. What’s not real is the smile I make when I don’t feel it. The laugh I produce on demand. The energy I perform when I have none left. The world rewards people who are always on — always warm, always approachable, always ready with a smile.

I became very good at being that person. So good that people stopped questioning it. So good that I almost stopped questioning it too.

“You can be the loudest person in the room and still feel completely alone inside it.”

So is the fake smile necessary?

Part of me says yes — it’s just how the world works. Not every smile needs to come from a deep place. That’s not fakeness, that’s just being human in a social world. But another part of me wonders what it would feel like to just… not. To walk in someday and let my face be exactly what it is.

Neutral. Tired. Real. Would people think I was rude? Probably. Would they understand that nothing is wrong — that I’m just not performing today? Almost certainly not. And that’s the exhausting part. The performance isn’t just expected. It’s so expected that the absence of it becomes a problem you have to explain.

I don’t have a clean answer to any of this.

But if you’re reading this and recognizing yourself — you’re not broken. You’re not cold. You’re not a bad person for needing silence more than company.

Some of us just live loudly on the outside while quietly on the inside. And both of those things are real. Both of those things are us.

Tonight I’ll go home, switch off the lights, put on my songs, and sit in my own world for a while. And that version of me — the quiet, unperforming, completely alone one — is just as valid as the one who made everyone laugh this morning.

Maybe more.,
