1. NAME THE FEELING, NOT THE FEAR

Anxious: ‘Do you still love me? Are we okay?’

Secure: ‘I’m feeling a bit disconnected today. Can we check in?’

This shows self-awareness, not insecurity. You’re owning your feeling without making them responsible for fixing your spiral.

2. ASK FOR SOMETHING SPECIFIC

Anxious: ‘I just need to know you care.’

Secure: ‘Can we have 10 minutes tonight to talk? I miss feeling close to you.’

Vague needs create vague responses. Specific requests get specific action.

They know exactly what will help you feel better.

3. DON’T APOLOGIZE FOR NEEDING REASSURANCE

Anxious: I’m sorry, I know I’m being crazy, but…

Secure: ‘I need some reassurance right now. Can you help me with that?’

Apologizing for your needs teaches them your needs are burdensome. Stating them calmly teaches them your needs are normal.

4. GIVE THEM A SCRIPT

Anxious: ‘Just tell me we’re okay!’ (demands)

Secure: ‘It would help to hear that you’re happy with us. Can you tell me that?’

When you’re specific about what words you need to hear, they can actually give it to you. No guessing games.

5. REASSURE YOURSELF FIRST, THEN ASK

Anxious: ‘Spiraling alone, then exploding with need’

Secure: ‘I know we’re solid. My anxiety is just loud today. Can we connect for a few minutes?’

When you self-soothe first, your ask comes from groundedness, not desperation. That energy shift changes everything.

Secure people need reassurance too. They just ask for it in ways that invite connection instead of defensiveness. The goal isn’t to stop needing reassurance. It’s to ask for it in a way that strengthens your relationship.

What’s the hardest part about asking for reassurance?

I know how hard it is to need reassurance and then hate yourself for needing it.

If you know you get attached too quickly but have no idea how to actually break the patterns, this guide was written for you.
