Virginia Delivers Statement Win Over №.8 Florida State in Double Overtime Thriller

On a crisp Friday night in Charlottesville, the Virginia Cavaliers delivered arguably the biggest victory of Tony Elliott’s tenure as head coach, edging out the №8 Florida State Seminoles 46–38 in double overtime.

The win was far more than another notch in the win column. It marks Virginia’s first home victory over a top-10 opponent since defeating FSU in 2005, and cements this game as a defining moment for the program.

The night at Scott Stadium (attendance: 50,107, the largest crowd since 2023) was an emotional rollercoaster. Virginia struck early, turning two first-quarter turnovers by FSU into touchdowns to build an early advantage. But the Seminoles answered, and by halftime the game was knotted at 21 apiece.

After three quarters, the score was 28–28. A dramatic closing stretch in the fourth quarter saw FSU pull ahead, but Virginia engineered a mammoth 16-play, nearly eight-minute drive capped by a 15-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Brown to tie the game at 35 and force overtime.

In the first overtime, both teams traded field goals. In the second overtime, Chandler Morris punched it in from four yards out, then connected on a two-point conversion pass to Trell Harris for the go-ahead score.

Florida State still had a final chance. On third down, a pass intended for Duce Robinson slipped through his hands and drifted out of the back of the end zone. On fourth-and-12 from the 27, Tommy Castellanos’ heave was intercepted by Ja’Son Prevard, sealing the upset.

Pandemonium followed: fans stormed the field, some scaling goalposts, others rushing the end zone. The ACC may impose a fine for the breach. Morris was electric, tallying three rushing touchdowns and two passing scores in a 440-yard offensive night for UVA His ability to execute in the clutch — including the game-winning run and two-point pass — underscores his status as Virginia’s centerpiece. Running back J’Mari Taylor added 99 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The offensive line deserves praise too, especially given injuries, for its performance in the run game and in protecting Morris. FSU’s Tommy Castellanos completed 254 yards and a touchdown through the air, adding 78 rushing yards and a score on the ground. Duce Robinson tormented Virginia’s secondary with nine catches for 147 yards and a TD. But the Seminoles were undone by critical mistakes in the clutch — namely the bobbled third-down pass and the interception in double overtime. Entering 2025, Elliott was on the hot seat. His first three seasons resulted in an 11–23 record, without a bowl appearance. Critics suggested he needed at least eight wins this season to retain support. Prior to this game, his best wins included a 2024 victory over №23 Pitt and a 2023 upset of №10 North Carolina. But this FSU win — over a top-10 opponent at home — may eclipse them all. With this result, UVA now sits at 4–1 overall and 2–0 in ACC play, firmly in the mix for respect and national attention. If Elliott can build on this momentum, it might serve as a turning point — not just for this season, but for how the program is viewed under his leadership.

Sports often hinge on defining moments — and Friday night’s double overtime victory over a top-10 Florida State team might be exactly that for Virginia. Chandler Morris cemented his role as a clutch leader, the offense and line executed when the lights were brightest, and Virginia’s defense just held on when needed.

This isn’t just a nice win on the resume — it might well be the turning point for Elliott’s tenure, for UVA’s confidence, and for how the Cavaliers are perceived across the ACC and the nation.
