The electronic clock on the Ministry building in Zagreb flashed 07:00, a green glare over the frozen square. It was not time, but a decree. We assembled, shivering, our breath forming identical clouds before us.

From the loudspeakers, the daily chant began. A litany of revised history, of victories in wars we never fought, of a leader who had always been. The children were taught to sing it. The adults were taught to fear the silence that followed.

In the crowd, a man named Marko held a single grain of salt between his thumb and forefinger, a tiny, contraband relic from a time before the “National Purity” laws. He remembered his grandmother’s kitchen, the real taste of food. He watched the clock change to 07:01. The chant concluded. The green light flickered.

A uniformed “Guardian” scanned the faces, his eyes searching for a flutter of dissent. Marko closed his fist. He knew the world of the clock was a lie, a relentless march toward a single, dead end. He knew that the only true act of rebellion was to remember. He swallowed the grain of salt and let the old, forbidden recipe burn in his mind, a silent, private chant against the hum of the machine.
