🌱 What I Discovered Today: The Hidden World Behind Every SMS
Day by day, I’m trying to learn something new — not for show, not for LinkedIn flexes, but because I genuinely enjoy understanding how technology works behind the scenes.
Today, I went down a rabbit hole and explored something we use every single day but rarely think about:
SMS, SMSC, USSD, and SMS Firewalls.
At first, I thought, “It’s just a text message. How complicated can it be?”
Turns out… a LOT happens before that tiny message reaches your phone.
I learned about SMSC (Short Message Service Center), which acts like a post office for text messages. Every SMS first reaches the SMSC, gets stored if needed, and is then delivered to the recipient.

I also discovered different types of SMS:
Transactional SMS — OTPs, banking alerts, order confirmations
Promotional SMS — Marketing and advertisements
Service SMS — Updates from companies and service providers

Another interesting topic was USSD, the technology behind codes like 123# and 99#. Unlike SMS, USSD works in real-time and doesn’t require internet access.
The most fascinating part was learning about SMS Firewalls. These act as security guards for mobile networks by detecting and blocking spam, phishing attempts, fake OTP messages, and fraudulent links before they reach users.
I also explored how Machine Learning can improve SMS security. By analyzing sender behavior, message patterns, links, traffic volume, and user reports, ML models can identify suspicious messages and help stop spam campaigns at scale.
Every day I realize that the technologies we take for granted are far more complex and fascinating than they appear.
