Gibson explores how postcapitalism generates its own religious forms. If in traditional capitalism the commodity was fetishized, in postcapitalism it is AI itself that is fetishized, elevated to object of worship. In Monalisa Overdrive, AI cultists do not seek to “liberate” the machine or subjugate it but to maintain a relationship of communion with it.
