The House That Welcomes Us
For a long time, I believed that home was simply the house we lived in.
When I was a child, my whole world fit inside that little universe.
It was where my father, my mother, and my siblings lived. Mornings smelled of coffee. On cold evenings, soup steamed on the table while the rain whispered against the roof. My childhood ran barefoot through the backyard, climbed trees to pick ripe fruit, and came back inside only when the sun began to fade. There was always a loving embrace that could soothe the pain of a scraped knee and make every fear disappear, if only for a few moments.
But childhood remains.
Because growing is never an invitation.
It is a calling.
When I left, I believed I was taking everything that belonged to me.
Without realizing it, I left that little girl behind in the old house. She remained among the memories while I moved forward, learning to be an adult.
Whenever I return to the past, I find that little girl waiting for me.
She became the guardian of the place where my story began.
Back then, I believed that home was somewhere we would never have to leave.
The Home We Become for Others
Life carried me to other places.
It was there that I discovered a home could also be shaped by my own hands.
I lit the stove before sunrise. I sat beside fevers until they passed in the middle of the night. I folded tiny clothes. I invented Sunday lunches. I learned that love often lives in the quiet gestures repeated every day, almost unnoticed.
While I cared for the house, another child was learning to call that place home.
Without noticing, I stopped looking for shelter.
I became the roof, even when everything around me had fallen apart.
I was warm and bread.
On days of cold and hunger.
I had to become light.
Even when I could no longer see my own way.
Without realizing it, I had become someone else’s home.
The Home We Build
The seasons change so that something new can begin to flow.
My son grew wings.
The man who had walked beside me was gone.
The house grew larger.
There was only one plate left on the table.
The weeks found a different rhythm.
And the silence, which had once felt empty, began revealing spaces I had never noticed before.
For the first time, I opened the windows without waiting for anyone to return.
Simply to let life in.
I saw the flowers.
I saw the butterflies.
For many years, I was home for everyone else.
Only later did I realize I had never built one for myself.
To shelter others, we must first become a dwelling.
The Home That Remains
That was when I understood there was another home.
One that exists in no document.
It has no walls.
No roof.
It is built from memories, affection, losses, new beginnings, and from that quiet strength life gives us to remain whole, even after countless goodbyes.
For a long time, I searched for a home in addresses, cities, and people.
Until I realized the houses had been left behind, but I was still carrying the keys.
Not the ones that unlock doors.
The ones that unlock recollections.
The ones that bring back the scent of coffee.
The taste of fruit picked straight from the tree.
The voice of someone who is no longer here.
The little girl who stayed behind.
Today, when someone asks me where my home is, I no longer think of a house.
I think of the invisible space I have built throughout my life.
A refuge where the little girl I once was, the woman I became, everyone I have loved — and those I have yet to love — can all live together.
Perhaps that is what home truly is:
the only place we never need to return to,
Because it never stopped dwelling within us.
