Distance Major Releases Impressive New Single “Bumper”

Electronic composer and producer Distance Major, aka Michael Keane, releases his new single, “Bumper,” a track lifted from his self-titled debut album.

Talking about the genesis of the track and its title, Distance Major says, “This song started as one idea which had an alternative groove, but during the composing and arranging, a second melody and voicing started to creep in and tried to overwrite the first idea. Both kept bumping heads, but ultimately by the end, there is some harmony among the two voices, hence the name ‘Bumper.’”

The resolved ostensible conflict between the two ideas transforms into the emotional foundation of the song, providing a leitmotif that doesn’t require lyrics.

“Bumper” reveals Distance Major’s creative process: an instinctive, extemporaneous approach. He usually starts by exploring various textures, rhythms, and tones. When something noteworthy takes place, he begins molding the music through precise sequencing and tempo.

According to Distance Major, “I’m always chasing a feeling first. Something that makes me want to stay inside the sound a little longer.”

Rather than slowly building to a dramatic sonic crescendo, the song shifts surface modalities and intensity, allowing for smoother progression and more nuanced meaning.
