Nasi Ayam Madura
On comfort, familiarity, and a plate of nasi ayam Madura.

There is something almost embarrassing about admitting that my comfort food is a humble plate of nasi ayam Madura. Not the expensive kind, not the trendy kind people post online or wait in line for — just the small stall near my place that somehow knows exactly what my bad days taste like. Whenever life feels inconvenient, overwhelming, or simply too much, I find myself walking there without thinking. It’s become less of a craving and more of an instinct, like my body has memorized the route long before my mind realizes what it’s looking for.
The funny thing is, it isn’t even nasi ayam Madura in general. If you asked me to eat it somewhere else, I’d probably say no. It has to be that stall. The one that’s close enough to feel familiar. The one that has never tried to be anything more than what it is. I’ve had nasi ayam Madura from other places before, and they’re fine. Some are probably better, if we’re being objective. But they never taste like the one I keep returning to.
Maybe that’s because comfort has very little to do with quality.
It has everything to do with familiarity.
The order has never changed, either. Fried sate kulit ayam, fried sate ampela hati, and tempe. Nothing more, nothing less. I’ve never been tempted to add anything else. I’ve never felt the need to experiment. If they’re out of one of those, I’d honestly rather come back another day. That’s how strangely specific comfort can be. It refuses substitutions. It insists on the smallest details, as if changing even one thing would somehow take away the feeling you’ve been chasing.
I know it’s probably not the healthiest thing to rely on. It’s fried, it’s oily, and if I eat it too often, there’s always that little voice in the back of my head reminding me about cholesterol, reminding me that I’ll probably wake up with a sore throat tomorrow. Sometimes I even tell myself I should choose something lighter, something better for me. Something that’s actually good for my body.
But somehow, I never do.
Not because I don’t know better. I do. I’ve heard every warning, and I can probably repeat them back word for word. It’s just that on certain days, the last thing I’m looking for is a healthy decision. I’m looking for something familiar. Something that asks nothing of me except to sit down, eat, and let the day become a little quieter than it was an hour ago.
I think we often assume comfort should always be good for us. That if something makes us feel safe, it should also make us healthier, happier, stronger. But sometimes comfort doesn’t work like that. Sometimes it’s imperfect. Sometimes it’s irrational. Sometimes it’s a plate of food you know you probably shouldn’t eat so often, yet somehow it keeps finding its way into your worst days because it has become part of how you survive them.
Maybe that’s why I keep going back.
Not because it’s extraordinary.
If anything, it’s remarkably ordinary. The same rice. The same fried chicken. The same skewers. The same tempe. The same familiar hands putting together my order the way they always have. Nothing about it changes, and maybe that’s exactly what I need. In a world where almost everything feels temporary, uncertain, or constantly asking me to adapt, there’s something comforting about knowing that one small corner of my neighborhood will probably look exactly the same tomorrow.
There’s a strange kind of peace in being known by something that doesn’t even know you back.
Maybe that’s what comfort really is — not excitement, not perfection, not even happiness. Just the quiet reassurance that when life feels inconvenient, when your heart is tired of carrying things it never asked to carry, there will always be somewhere you instinctively return to.
For me, it just happens to be a small stall selling nasi ayam Madura.
And somehow, for a little while, that’s enough.
