On DON’T LOVE ME, Omah Lay is Detached; He Feels Nothing

In the build up to the release of his forthcoming album — Clarity of Mind on April 3rd, 2026, Omah Lay dropped DON’T LOVE ME, a song focused on emotional numbness, sexual encounters, and people-pleasing (with money). The music video followed on his YouTube channel and at the time of writing it has gained traction with over 1.7 million views.

DON’T LOVE ME is melancholic. It is a recalibration of Omah Lay’s empath self as seen on songs like Damn, Understand, Bad Influence, etc. after the publishing of Waist, a chants-driven and upbeat track which explores an obsession with females’ derrière, as well as his fallibility to it.

Now, speaking of Waist — in the visuals for DON’T LOVE ME, a reverbed version of the ass-loving tune kicks off the viewing experience. It is meticulously slowed down to blend into the more sedate music video, and it works. Another thing to observe is the formatting of the song title. DON’T LOVE ME is written upside down to signify disorientation and chaos, I presume.

While Waist praises the female body, DON’T LOVE ME is focused on Omah Lay’s conclusive intent; sex with no strings attached.

It is an honest confession.

For a video shot in colour, everything about it is monochromatic from the outfits to other subtle elements. Light also plays an intriguing role here.

Back to the reverbed Waist I mentioned. After the lyrics, “…carry for waist (repeated),” a black dog — possibly a Xoloitzcuintli or a Doberman Pinscher — goes through a door that leads us to Omah Lay. He is dressed in a white quarter-zip shirt and trousers of the same colour.

DON’T LOVE ME begins with a concurrent interpretation of the song as Omah Lay sings, “I’ve been running….” He is likely on a treadmill but it is unclear since only his head to thighs are visible. This is called pictorial storytelling or Mickey Mousing in music videos. It is a direct visualization of lyrics.

Moving on, slowly, vixens are introduced, and of different skin tones. They sit in a grey-walled room while Omah Lay jumps off a couch, mumbling, “Hennessy no dey hit me again / Igbo no dey high me again.” Hennessy is an alcoholic beverage and Igbo is a Nigerian slang for marijuana — both psychoactive substances or items that can cause disorientation and hallucinations, but, Omah Lay is unreactive.

They just don’t work.

Numb

Now, to the vixens. Omah Lay sings, “Shawty says she wan fix up her nails, I pay for both she and her friends,” The mythic shawty in this scenario is the fairest girl in the room. Of course, his lover is with other girls who have characteristic traits that will be revealed soon.

Boldly, Omah Lay states, “I just want get in their pants!” And then, their personalities are revealed as he puffs what looks like Igbo. They are labelled as follows:

1. Power Couple: The fair lady, and a high-achieving, stylish duo (with Omah Lay) admired for their love and success.
2. It Girl: A charming lady who’s the center of attention with effortless style.
3. Industry Sweetheart: A talented lady breaking barriers and winning hearts in her field — music and entertainment.
4. PR Princess: A polished lady promoting herself or her brand with charm and poise.

The girls are on a roster and Omah Lay wants them all. His means? Money. He will please his Harem with cash and generous gifts just to sleep with them. While he disdains love, coitus is just enough.

Rotation

The music video continues in the rustic room with Omah Lay interacting with his girls and other scenic moments, slow movements and confident stares unravel in the shots.

In an attempt at convergent thinking, on DON’T LOVE ME, Omah Lay objectifies the girls in the room. Something my pen pal, Oba T.K., calls transactional libertine. It is after a realization that love can heal; as he sings on Seyi Vibez’ Healer — “My baby is my healer.” But, this realization does not last long. Omah Lay succumbs to his depressive state regardless.

For the power couple girl, who has the sharpest jaw line in the film alongside her being brunette, she is one of the face masks Omah Lay examines on a wall, just as It girl and others.

Most noticeably, Omah Lay drops to his knees to the seductive sways of two female silhouettes. He is discombobulated. There is also an acknowledgement of his state of mind with two male models appearing with “sad boy” and “bad boy” projected on their clothing.

He just wants to get in their pants

At the end of the clip, something changes. He surrenders. Even if Omah Lay has kept affection at bay for over 3 minutes run-time of the music video, he mouths, “I love you,” to his power couple girlie, now riding in a convertible with him. However, she responds, “Don’t love me. Mm-hmm, just make love!”
