A Message from a Stranger

One question no one will ever answer honestly: would you still leave if you knew what loneliness truly feels like there?

To myself…

Before you leave your homeland, pack your bags, and take your first step away from everything you’ve ever known, remember this: you are not walking toward an easy life… you are walking toward a completely different one.

Immigration feels like a dream right now. A new start. A fresh chance. An opportunity to finally create the life you’ve always dreamed of.

And it will feel very exciting at first. All the new streets, new faces, independence, the feeling of belonging to yourself at last.

For a short while you’ll think you did the right thing without doubt.

But no one tells you that loneliness feels different in a foreign land.

It doesn’t come all at one time. It grows in silence.

It starts in the quiet of your room after a long day. Eating alone more often than you want. Know that you are invisible in the city, no matter how crowded.

There will be people around you, but you will still feel alone.

And little by little you’ll miss what you assumed was a given. Your mother calling your name. Giggling around the table with your family. The comfort of the home. The streets you walk through every day without paying attention to them.m.

You’ll realize too late that the smallest things were the ones that mattered most.

The holidays will hurt the most.

While everyone celebrates, you’ll sit there trying to convince yourself that it doesn’t bother you. You’ll look at family photos from far away, smiling during short phone calls so no one notices the heaviness in your voice.

Some nights, you’ll cry without fully understanding why. Or maybe because there are too many reasons to explain.

You’ll lie awake overthinking everything, trying to stay strong while feeling yourself slowly falling apart.

And with time, you may feel yourself fading little by little. Not because you are weak… but because immigration takes pieces of you quietly, without asking.

Life there will not always be kind. It will be harsher than you imagined. It will force you to grow up faster, to depend on yourself, and to face parts of yourself you never had to face before.

But somewhere in the middle of all this pain, something else will happen too.

You’ll discover strength you never knew you had.

You’ll learn how to survive your worst moments alone. You’ll learn how to become your own safe place when no one else is around.

And despite everything… don’t regret leaving.

Because when you chose to go, you weren’t running away. You were searching for a stronger version of yourself.

And little by little, through every lonely night and every difficult day, that version is being created.

So don’t lose yourself in the process.

And whenever life feels unbearably heavy, remember this journey was never about escaping… it was about becoming.

One day, when you look back, you’ll realize immigration was never your enemy.

It was the road that changed you. The road that shaped you into someone stronger than you ever imagined.

— From you, to yourself… from far away.
