One of my earliest memories of my Sesame Street days is a video of the musical artist Feist helping Elmo and his friends count to four.

Feist was listened to quite frequently in my first childhood home, and every time I hear it now, I am sent back to those early days of nostalgia. I remember my mom and I singing it together, music a way for us to connect. I was a fiend for Sesame Street; it was constantly on our tv along with Yo Gabba Gabba, and other popular and quite fun television shows for younger children.

Nostalgia is a bittersweet feeling for most of us. For me, I feel both a surge of happiness and nausea. When looking back on old photos or videos it’s hard to believe how long ago they took place, when it conflicts with how recent it feels. Life was so much simpler, and yet so hard to remember for me. Having media to look back on or songs that send you back in time like a real-life time machine. I’m so very lucky to have media that I can watch, that is physical and very real. To be able to look back on my early childhood is crazy. I seem like a completely different person, and in some ways I am, and in others, I’m not.

Just recently, I discovered that Feist was a part of an indie band called Broken Social Scene, which has a really good song called “Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl”, which was released in 2002. Feist has also released numerous other songs as part of her solo career, with songs like “Mushaboom” and “My Moon My Man”. She made an appearance in the 2011 film, The Muppets, and with a really distinct voice, she is able to spot in the “Life’s a Happy Song” montage, if one could call it that. Speaking of, The Muppets were also a staple in my early childhood, honestly, anything involving muppets I dabbled in, Barnie & Friends, Sesame Street, Yo Gabba Gabba.

All in all, Feist always helps me connect to my early childhood, especially since it was pivotal listening in my old home. It helps me look back on my experiences as a 6-year-old or younger.
