No Clipping Out of Reality

A how-to guide to finding your way into and out of the backrooms

Imagine strolling through a building. There are numerous people about. There’s a sense of calm and familiarity. Everything is as it should be.

And then without warning, your surroundings change in an instant.

One second you’re in a room alive with people and the next, you’re in this strange almost otherworldly room. No matter where you go, its the same thing — peeled yellow wall paper, damp carpets, and a constant and annoying buzzing of florescent lights that’s enough to drive anyone mad.

You don’t know how you got here. All you know you need to get out of here. But no matter which direction you take, you can’t find your way out!

The strange other reality you’ve just fallen into is what is known as The Back Rooms. And as difficult as it is to escape them, it’s just as difficult to enter one as stumbling into one most often happens by chance.

The Backrooms and Liminal Space

The Backrooms is a fairly new internet urban legend only going as far as 2019.

They involve the concept of liminal space — empty, dead areas that were once vibrant with life. With no humans around whatsoever, these liminal spaces have an eerie sense of loneliness and even dread.

The misfortune of finding yourself in a backroom is most relevant in video games. And as near impossible as it is to escape them, how does one find themselves in a backroom anyway?

There are several methods to find your way into the Back Rooms.

• The Glitch in reality

One way to find a way into the backrooms is to look for subtle glitches in reality. Often, these glitches are hidden in plain sight. Look for anything that appears off or out of place.

• Random and unexpected entrances

Sometimes you can fall into the backrooms because you walked through an entrance that wasn’t supposed to be there. This can include a door that just looks out of place and seems to lead to nowhere or shouldn’t even exist in the first place.

• No Clipping out of reality

This is the most difficult method of accessing the Backrooms with a very low 1 in 10,000 chance of success. If you access the backroom through no clipping, it is by pure luck. “No clipping” involves finding a glitch in reality and using that glitch as an access point. Think of it as a portal into the Backrooms. Lore says that if you find a glitch such as a part of the wall that just looks off, if you lean into it, you have a chance of falling into the Backrooms.

• “Staircase method”

Like no clipping out of reality, The “Staircase method” is just as rare and unlikely to happen. It’s also the most dangerous. If you want to risk it, the staircase method involves intentionally missing that last step.

When you do, supposedly you will fall through the floor, out of reality and into the liminal space of the Backrooms. However, there are specifics to this method as it will only work on a specific set of stairs.

Okay, you’ve successfully (or unfortunately) found yourself into the Backrooms.

Now how in the hell do you get out of here?

Escaping the Backrooms is terrifyingly more difficult than entering them in the first place. As void as the Backrooms are, you are by no means alone. There is the constant presence of a sinister entity lurking the corners that stays just out of sight.

• No clipping into reality

Just like with no clipping out of reality, you can no clip right back into reality. And like no clipping out of reality, it is extremely difficult. Look for glitches in reality or walls that don’t look quite stable.

• A light portal

One way to escape is by accessing an intensely bright light portal.

This way out happens purely by chance as it randomly appears within various levels. This portal is one of the most rare entry ways to escape the Backrooms.

• Passing levels

Often, the only way out of the Backrooms is by no other choice but to successfully complete the levels of the Backrooms.

If you’re lucky enough, there is a slim but hopeful chance one of these methods will work. Otherwise, you might have to face the startling and horrifying reality that you just might be trapped in the Backrooms permanently.
