Sharia Cooperatives: A Real Solution Amidst the Snare of Loan Sharks

The salary has just been paid, but the debt notification has already arrived. That is the routine of some people who are trapped in online loans. When they need fast funds, many people are tempted to click “agree” without really reading the interest, fines, or other provisions.

Everything seems easyuntil the bill balloons and their good name is at stake. The phenomenon of online loans, especially illegal ones, is not just a financial issue. It has become a social crisis. Starting from intimidation, spreading personal data, to cases of suicide, all of which haunt people who are trapped in mounting consumer debt. Ironically, in the midst of this chaos, there is one institution that actually has great potential as a solution: sharia cooperatives.

So far, cooperatives have often been looked down upon. Especially sharia ones the stigma is still strong: slow, old-fashioned, and impractical. In fact, sharia cooperatives have a financial model that is very relevant to today’s crisis. No usury, no interest, and based on a mutual assistance contract. The concept is not just “borrow money and then pay more”, but there are principles of responsibility, justice, and blessings.

Many sharia cooperatives apply murabahah, ijarah, or qardhul hasan contracts in their financing. This means that they do not just provide loans, but encourage their members to be economically empowered. Compare this with online loans, which are solely oriented towards profit. Get money quickly, and get strangled by interest quickly.

If Islamic cooperatives are that great, why are they still less popular than online loans? There are two answers: branding and access. Online loans are everywhere: social media, YouTube ads, even in family WhatsApp groups. Meanwhile, Islamic cooperatives rarely appear on the surface, let alone on digital platforms. Many cooperatives are still not digitalized, do not have applications, and even their websites are not updated.

In addition, Islamic cooperatives have not fully worked on the youth market. Generation Z and millennials are more familiar with fintech than cooperatives. In fact, the potential for collaboration between sharia cooperatives and technology could be a game-changer. Imagine a sharia cooperative mobile application, with transparent contracts and fast service it would definitely be more attractive and safer than illegal online loans.

Sharia cooperatives do need improvement from within in terms of management, transparency, and professionalism. But on the other hand, the state must also play a role. Sharia financial literacy is not yet widespread. Many people do not even know that sharia cooperatives can provide interest-free financing. The government, campuses, mosques, and Islamic economic influencers can collaborate to educate the public so that they are not easily tempted by online loans.

This does not mean that sharia cooperatives are perfect institutions. But in the midst of the crisis caused by online loans, we need to find solutions that are not only fast, but also sustainable. Sharia cooperatives, with their collective spirit and principles of fairness, can be a way out as long as they are given space, support, and innovation.

Our society actually has strong roots of mutual cooperation. Cooperatives are a real manifestation of that value. So, when consumer debt is increasingly destroying many families, Islamic cooperatives can be there as a protector: not with interest, but with empathy. Not with fines, but with shared responsibility. Maybe what we need is not the fastest financial institution, but the most humane one. And Islamic cooperatives, although simple, are a real step towards fair and civilized finance.
