TKMS Hands Over Second HDW Class NTSP Submarine TCG Hızırreis to Turkish Navy
The Turkish submarine modernization program marked a significant milestone on November 27, 2025, as thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) officially handed over the second HDW Class NTSP submarine, TCG Hızırreis, during a formal ceremony in Gölcük. This delivery represents the second of six submarines planned for transfer to the Turkish Navy under a long-term cooperation and construction agreement.
The handover was conducted by Gölcük Naval Shipyard (GNSY) to the Turkish procurement authority SSB (Savunma Sanayii Başkanlığı), which subsequently transferred the vessel to the Navy. The first submarine under this program was delivered in October 2024. Representatives from SSB, GNSY, the Turkish Navy, and TKMS were present during the signing ceremony, marking another collaborative achievement in the multiyear naval development program.
Christian Rogge, Executive Vice President of Submarines at TKMS, emphasized the strong collaboration among all stakeholders involved. “All parties have shown exceptional commitment since the beginning of the project. Projects of this scope can only be executed within planned timelines and budgets through seamless cooperation. Today’s handover reflects the strong partnership between TKMS, GNSY, and the Turkish Navy,” he said.
Under the terms of the cooperation, TKMS is responsible for submarine design, sourcing and supplying all materials, and supervising the construction and testing phases. Each vessel is also backed by an 18-month warranty, ensuring ongoing technical support and reliability. This comprehensive role underscores TKMS’s long-standing expertise in submarine technology and naval system integration.
Project Manager Bernd Krekeler acknowledged the efforts of the multinational team behind the milestone. He expressed gratitude to engineering, production, procurement, and IT teams located in both Kiel and Gölcük. He highlighted that lessons learned from building the first submarine contributed significantly to meeting the schedule for the second.
Production of the remaining four submarines is progressing simultaneously, each at different stages of completion. According to GNSY’s official timetable, the third submarine is expected to be delivered approximately one year from now, as the Turkish Navy continues enhancing its underwater defense capabilities.
TKMS, one of the world’s leading naval shipbuilders, employs more than 9,100 personnel across its facilities in Germany and Brazil. The company specializes in submarines, surface vessels, maritime electronics, and security technologies. With more than 185 years of maritime heritage, TKMS continues to innovate and expand its footprint in global naval markets by delivering highly advanced and customized solutions to its international partners.
The handover of TCG Hızırreis marks another step forward in strengthening Turkey’s naval readiness and technological advancement. As the submarine program progresses, both TKMS and Turkish stakeholders reaffirm their commitment to timely production, strategic cooperation, and enhancing the nation’s defense capabilities.
