My name is Athanetius Ogwuche Agbo, and this is the story of how I died at 26, shortly after becoming a barrister.

But that sentence makes no sense without understanding where it began.

I was never truly believed in by my father.

From childhood, I lived under a kind of quiet rejection that is difficult to explain unless you’ve felt it. It wasn’t loud abuse. It was absence. Absence of faith. Absence of expectation. Absence of pride.

In our home, I was not seen as someone who would amount to much.

I was my mother’s second child — her first son, born after an older sister, and followed by seven younger sisters and one younger brother, Peter.

But even that position carried no special meaning in my father’s eyes.

He had other children from other wives, and in his world, the sons from those unions seemed to matter more. They were the ones he spoke about with pride. The ones he believed had a future.

I was not one of them.

From early on, I understood something without being told directly:

I was expected to exist… not to succeed.

That kind of reality shapes how you see yourself before the world even has a chance to define you. You start questioning your worth in silence. You start measuring yourself against people who were already chosen.

I tried anyway.

I tried to earn attention. I tried to earn approval. I tried to become visible in a home where I felt invisible.

But no matter what I did, it never felt like enough.

Still, I refused to accept that version of my life.

I carried rejection like fuel.

Through school, I pushed forward. My mother supported me in every way she could. My father contributed to my education in his own way, but it never came with belief — only obligation. It felt like funding a journey he did not expect to succeed.

One of my older stepbrothers also helped me at certain moments, but most of the journey, I walked alone.

And that loneliness became something else over time.

It became discipline.

It became ambition.

It became survival.

At 24, I became a lawyer.

And for a moment, I thought I had finally escaped the life I was assigned at birth.

I thought I had finally proven something.

But life doesn’t always respond the way you expect.

Because just when I thought everything was beginning…

it started falling apart in ways I never saw coming.

At 26, after attending Law School in Lagos, I was called to the Nigerian Bar in Abuja and became a barrister.

For the first time in my life, I was seen.

The same father who never believed in me began to acknowledge me. People who once dismissed me started showing respect. Even those who doubted me could no longer ignore what I had become.

It felt like everything I suffered through finally had meaning.

But sometimes, life gives recognition and takes something else in return.

Shortly after being called to the Bar, I fell seriously ill.

After medical tests, I was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis.

No alcohol. No smoking. No lifestyle explanation. Nothing that made sense.

Just a body breaking down at the peak of a life that had only just begun to open.

For three months, I fought quietly.

Between hospital visits, pain, and fear, I kept believing I would recover. I kept believing I had finally reached the part of life where things would get better.

But I didn’t.

And before I continue, there is something you need to understand.

My name is not just a story of struggle and achievement.

Because I am already gone.

And the person telling this story now is Peter — my younger brother, the last boy child in the family.

👉 In Part 2, I will tell you what really happened in those final months… and what death took away from him just when life finally began to respond.
