Nonduality in the Spiritual Dimensions of Reality

Can the spiritual dimensions of reality/consciousness exist in a nondual universe?

Someone recently sent me a summary of my 2020 article on the ‘Spiritual Dimensions of Reality’ (linked below). Reading that summary prompted me to reflect on how I have changed since I wrote (and updated) that article, moving more toward nondualism. My beliefs about the Spiritual Dimensions of Reality have not changed, but their role in my experience has.

Spiritual Dimensions of Reality / Consciousness

In 2020, I published a very long Medium article on the Spiritual Dimensions of Reality. It was a 94-minute read on 1D, 2D, 3D, 4D… to 7D. Our earthly existence is mostly 3D (the 3rd Dimension), with 4D and up being “higher” spiritual dimensions, and 1D and 2D being “lower” dimensions of reality (or consciousness). (Note that this does not correlate with physical and mathematical dimensions in theoretical physics.)

I became interested in this topic through my experiences of altered states of consciousness (or awareness) mostly through meditation and some other means when I was young. I have also been a big fan of the Seth/Jane Roberts’ channeled books over the years.

When I was working on that 2020 article (linked below), I was listening to online spiritual channelers talking about the different dimensions of reality, and I was even channeling my own spiritual guides. There was also a lot of talk about how the pandemic was propelling our planet’s transition from the 3rd Dimension to either the 4th or 5th Dimension (depending on how those were defined).

However, I found the spiritual dimensions very confusing because each speaker (human and spiritual) seemed to describe the dimensions differently. The 4th and 5th Dimensions (those just above our own) were especially bewildering.

So I set out to compile and harmonize as many definitions of the spiritual dimensions of reality that I could find. The result was my 2020 article, which contains a plethora of references to my sources and has been updated by me several times…

A Nondual Reality

I stopped channeling is 2023 when I felt I no longer needed it.

My current views on the spiritual dimensions of reality (or consciousness) are informed by Nondualism. Nondualism is the belief that everything is connected to everything else. The diversity of our perceptions and experiences is actually a single, Nondual Oneness.

The Nondual Oneness is so complex that we cannot logically comprehend it. It is much easier to assume the differences we perceive are more real than the oneness. Nondualism typically labels the separation and diversity as temporary appearances (or illusions). (See, for example, Zen/Chan/Soen/Thien Buddhism, Advaita Vedanta, and philosophical Taoism.)

To comprehend nonduality, speakers often emphasize being open to what is happening in our present-moment experience (“*wu wei”* in Taoism, for example). So, …

If an alternative dimension of consciousness is in our present-moment awareness, then that is what is happening now.

It is as real as what happened yesterday (though both may be considered an illusion at a deeper level).

An Infinite Reality

Being open to the present-moment requires a suspension of expectations and judgments (what Buddhists call attachments and aversions). To do that, I try to remind myself that we exist in an infinite universe. This is a belief, as no one (no science) can prove whether the universe is infinite.

Infinite means there are no boundaries. Anything with boundaries is finite — there is a beginning and an end; there is an inside and an outside; there are things that are possible, and things that are not possible. Therefore…

Anything and everything is possible in an infinite and boundaryless universe.

To say something is not possible is to put boundaries on infinity, which is, by definition, impossible. So, …

Any model of spiritual dimensions of reality is theoretically possible — even ones that no one has yet described.

My 2020 article summarized the more common models of spiritual dimensions, which mostly describe 7 dimensions. That, of course, is a boundary. The 7 Dimensions model is simply a convenient way to simplify spiritual reality for a 3D audience.

Thus, my belief (which is in section [0.03] of the 2020 article) is that spiritual dimensions are infinite. As Seth/Jane Roberts said, ...

“What you call dimensions represent states in which reality is perceived. You perceive reality in three dimensions, and you have a glimpse of reality in a fourth dimension. There are many dimensions, however, in all directions. … Now, I will tell you further that these dimensions merely represent various capacities of consciousness. All these dimensions exist at once, and even within your system, but your consciousness cannot perceive them. … Nothing but the various stages of consciousness separates the dimensions, you see, but the separation is quite effective nonetheless.”

… “but the separation is quite effective nonetheless.” That is because we believe in a set of rules associated with the story we create for each dimension. Those rules prevent us from regularly experiencing realities outside of our normal existence. Gravity, for example, is a really tough rule to break!

In sum,

My view on the spiritual dimensions of reality is grounded in these two perspectives…

1. Alternative spiritual dimensions are as real as any other experience we perceive in our consciousness. Each dimension has a set of rules for what is real and unreal, and what can and cannot be done. But, as someone once said, rules are meant to be broken.
2. We exist in an infinite universe. Every model of spirituality is a simplification of that infinity and can find its audience. But some models (like the 7 Dimension ones) have larger audiences than others. (My infinite dimensions approach is probably a hard sell!)

(By the way, in Seth/Jane Roberts’ model of the spiritual dimensions, the final stage of ascension through the spiritual dimensions is to dissolve our individual entity (soul) into the nondual oneness of the universe/all-that-is.)
