Felixstowe, Southampton or Tilbury? Choosing the Right UK Port for SPC & LVT Flooring Imports

The three main entry points for Chinese vinyl flooring differ by more than transit days — here’s how to actually choose

Every UK vinyl flooring importer eventually asks the same question: which port should the container come into? The instinctive answer is “whichever is fastest” — but for most importers, that’s the wrong question. Ocean transit time from Ningbo or Shanghai to the three main UK entry points — Felixstowe, Southampton and Tilbury — varies by only a few days. The real cost driver sits on the other side of the port: inland haulage to your warehouse or first delivery point.

Felixstowe — the default, and usually the right one

Felixstowe is the UK’s primary container port, with the deepest and most frequent direct service network from Ningbo. For most national distributors — businesses supplying customers across England rather than concentrated in one region — it’s the sensible default. Transit runs roughly 26–30 days. Unless your distribution base gives you a specific reason to choose otherwise, Felixstowe is where most SPC and LVT importers should start.

Southampton — the south and south-west specialist

If your customer base sits in the south or south-west of England, Southampton earns its place over Felixstowe purely on inland haulage economics. The ocean transit is comparable — also around 26–30 days — but the road distance from port to warehouse can be meaningfully shorter for a Bristol, Exeter or south-coast distribution base. Southampton is also a sensible choice for London Build-to-Rent projects sourcing on a south-of-London logistics chain.

Tilbury — closest to central London

For importers whose primary market is central London and the east of England, Tilbury has the shortest inland leg of the three. Transit runs slightly longer at 28–32 days, but for a London-concentrated developer or distributor, the saving on haulage after the container lands can outweigh the extra day or two at sea.

The calculation that actually matters

Total landed cost isn’t ocean freight plus duty plus VAT — it’s that stack plus inland haulage to the point where the flooring actually gets used or sold. For a national distributor moving stock across multiple regions from a central warehouse, Felixstowe’s connectivity usually wins regardless of exact location. For a regionally concentrated importer or a single-project developer, the inland leg can flip the decision entirely — a marginally longer ocean transit into the nearer port is often the lower total-cost choice.

The practical approach: map your actual delivery points, get inland haulage quotes from your forwarder for both the “obvious” port and the “closer” alternative, and compare the full landed cost — not just the headline transit days.

Getting the rest of the shipment right

Port choice is one variable in a shipment that also depends on getting the HS classification, duty rate, VAT treatment and documentation correct from the outset.
