Feature Adoption Funnels: How to Know If Your App’s New Feature Is a Hit or Miss!!
Your educational app just launched a new feature, “Smart Quiz Mode,” which promises to save students from failing their exams and eating instant noodles for life (hmmm. ok!)🤣
But instead of a round of applause, you’re left wondering: Are people even using it? 😅🧐😩
Well… You can trackthis
This is where the Feature Adoption Funnel comes in. What is a feature adoption funnel? Relax! I’ll explain…

A feature adoption funnel can help you determine if your new feature is the next big thing 👌🏻or a flop 👎🏻.
What Is a Feature Adoption Funnel?
It’s basically a way to track how users go from “Hmmm, what’s this?” to “OMG, I can’t love this!” with your app’s new feature.
The Stages of the Feature Adoption Funnel

1. AWARENESS: What does this button do? 🤔
This is where users first notice the new feature. Maybe it’s a pop-up, an email, or a big red button that says, “Click me, you need me!”
For our Smart Quiz Mode, it’s the moment students see the feature announcement and think, “Eh, why not?” 😁
At this point, you should track how many users are aware that this quiz feature exists. Yes, you have 2000 users but what percentage of those users even know of this new feature?
How many users are aware of the announcement? If you have this number… that's how many are AWARE!
For this story, 1800 users became aware 👌🏻
2. ACTIVATION: Let’s give it a spin 😉
The user clicks the button and tries the feature. 🥳 This is like the first date; you’re hoping they like what they see and don’t ghost you. 😩 Phew! This stage can be nerve-wracking. After spending weeks or even months developing a tiny button, you pray and hope they use it after noticing it.
It’s like you are a chef…After preparing a nice dish, you are pleased that your friends love the way it looks but what matters more is if they will try it out and love the taste
For Smart Quiz Mode, it’s when students complete their first AI-generated quiz.
In this stage, count how many users give the feature a shot. (And cross your fingers.)
Remember you have 1800 users who are aware of this feature… luckily, 1500 ACTIVATED the feature.
Not bad 😅
Onto the next stage..
3. ADOPTION: “This Is Actually Cool”
The user starts using the feature regularly. It’s no longer a one-time fling; they’re committed… kind of.
I guess the first date went well 😉

For Smart Quiz Mode, students are now using it to prep for every test (because, let’s face it, they didn’t study until last night).
I hope you weren’t like them in school.😒
In this stage, you measure how many users find the feature valuable enough to stick with it.
For your users, 1600 out of 1800 adopted the feature which means they came back again.
They are STUCK!!
Hopefully 😩
4. RETENTION: “Can’t Live Without It”
Weeks (or months) later, users are still using the feature. It’s officially part of their routine — like morning coffee or doom-scrolling Twitter.
Can you think of another product that you can’t live without?
Snapchat may be 🤔….. You send streaks to your friends every day! You are hooked. Some of you would rather be hit by a train than allow a streak to end

For Smart Quiz Mode, this is the student who aces their exams and says, “I owe it all to this app!”
Remember the chef example?! Don’t sleep on me!
Well…. Your friends keep coming back to ask for that particular dish!
You should open a restaurant at this stage 😅😂
See how many users are still engaged over time.
After 3 months you notice that 1500 out of the 1600 users were retained.
Not bad at all
GRAND FINALE!!!
ADVOCACY: “You’ve Gotta Try This!”
This is the dream stage!
Every product manager and team wants this
Users love the feature so much they’re telling their friends, coworkers, and random strangers in the grocery line.
I mean... who wouldn’t tell their friends and loved ones about the app that helped them prepare for their test last minute and ace it?
Uhmmmm. Except there's a sorta competition 🤐

As the PM, at this point, you can track referrals, reviews, or shares.
Why It’s Called a Funnel (and Not a Water Slide)
A funnel narrows as you go down, just like the number of users at each stage. Tons of people might see your feature, but only a small percentage will actually become loyal users.
You gerrit? If you don’t gerrit, forget abourrriit 😂
How This Helps in EdTech (and Saves Your Sanity)
For educational apps, feature adoption funnels are your holy grail.
They don’t just tell you if users like your feature..they tell you where things are going wrong so you can fix them.
For instance:
- If students aren’t activating Smart Quiz Mode, maybe the pop-up looks more annoying than exciting. You can fix this
- If they try it but don’t come back, maybe the quizzes feel too generic.
- And if they love it but don’t tell anyone, you might need to add a share button — or bribe them with stickers. 😂
The feature adoption funnel isn’t just for data folks…it’s for anyone who wants to create features that users love. So the next time you roll out something new, don’t just cross your fingers and wish upon a star..

Use the funnel to find out if your feature is a hit, a miss, or somewhere in between.
Be intentional!!
And remember: every drop-off is a chance to learn (and maybe cry a little).
What do you think? Ready to funnel your way to success?
