Intrinsic Probability, Theism, and an Evolutionary Mindless Chance Process

We assess the antecdent par tof the claim: “Given a creator is no more probable intrinsically than a mindless chance process, certain observations give prima facie reason to think theism is probably false.”

The assessment uses Draper’s criteria for intrinsic probability only where they apply. Intrinsic probability is evaluated for theism. For the “mindless chance process” (understood as unguided Darwinian evolution starting from already existing life), I do not assign an intrinsic probability score. I inventory the unavoidable prerequisites it must presuppose to do the explanatory work it claims.

1) Intrinsic Probability of Theism in Draper’s Framework

Content of theism (Draper):

  1. There exists one unique fundamental personal reality.
  2. This reality is or has a mind.
  3. Maximal attributes: omnipotence, omniscience, perfect goodness.
  4. Often taken to be necessarily existent.

Criteria and result:

  • Modesty. The content set is short and general relative to more specific metaphysical packages. On Draper’s standard, this counts in favor of intrinsic probability.
  • Coherence. Theism is internally coherent if the maximal attributes are jointly consistent. That is the relevant notion of coherence here. On that understanding, the package is coherent.

Interim conclusion: by Draper’s criteria alone, theism is intrinsically modest and coherent. This is the only place in the comparison where intrinsic probability, in Draper’s sense, is directly applicable.

2) Prerequisite Load for the “Mindless Chance Process”

The comparison class on the other side is not a world hypothesis but a mid-level mechanism claim: unguided Darwinian evolution starting from life that already exists and then producing the observed biosphere. Such a mechanism cannot operate in a vacuum. To function, it must presuppose a set of enabling conditions that are unavoidable and generally accepted. Listing these does not assign an intrinsic probability score. It states what must already be in place if the mechanism is to do what is claimed.

Unavoidable, generally accepted prerequisites:

  1. Heritable information and copying. A genome and copying machinery with sufficiently high fidelity to preserve lineages.
  2. Boundary control. Functional membranes maintaining internal conditions suitable for replication and metabolism.
  3. Energy capture and conversion. Systems that harvest and convert energy in quantities adequate to power replication, repair, and regulation.
  4. Core cellular machinery. At least the functional equivalents of transcription, translation, and protein folding.
  5. Error detection and repair. Mechanisms that keep mutation and damage below error thresholds that would destroy heritable information.
  6. Waste management and recycling. Systems that remove or repurpose toxic byproducts and faulty molecules.
  7. Regulated gene expression. Multi-layer control over when, where, and how gene products are produced.
  8. Coordinated metabolic pathways. Interlocking biochemical processes that collectively sustain viability.
  9. Heritable variation at viable rates. Variation sufficient to generate differences, but low enough to preserve organismal function.
  10. Selection environments. Conditions that impose differential reproductive success on variants without foresight or purpose.
  11. Genotype to phenotype mapping with local navigability. A mapping rich enough for small heritable changes to yield survivable functional differences despite coding constraints.

These are not evidences. They are enabling conditions that the mindless process must presuppose to do the work attributed to it. If they are absent, the mechanism cannot generate and sustain the observed diversity.

3) How the Comparison Works

The opponent’s slogan compares a creator with a mindless process. On Draper’s own method, intrinsic probability is a tool for evaluating world-level hypotheses by modesty and coherence. Applying it to theism is appropriate. Applying it to a mid-level mechanism is not necessary. What is necessary is that, when the mechanism is used as a comparator against a creator, its prerequisite load is made explicit. Otherwise the mechanism is granted a misleading appearance of modesty by hiding the very conditions that make it operative.

4) Conclusion

By Draper’s criteria, theism has a concise content set and is coherent when its attributes are jointly consistent. The mindless chance process, as a mechanism starting from life, presupposes a substantial list of unavoidable enabling conditions before it can perform its claimed explanatory role. Since the intrinsic probability tool is not designed to score a mid-level mechanism, the proper use is asymmetric: evaluate theism by Draper’s modesty and coherence, and present the mechanism’s prerequisite inventory without pretending it has low content by default.

Under this disciplined division of labor, the claim that a creator is no more intrinsically probable than a mindless chance process is not established. Theism meets Draper’s intrinsic probability test. The mechanism does its work only when a demanding set of prerequisites is already granted, and that load must be acknowledged in any fair comparison.
