An Introvert’s Multi Factor Authentication (MFA)

The mask isn’t fake; it is a tool of navigate the system

The modern corporate world loves to preach: “Bring your authentic self to work!” It’s a beautiful sentiment, provided your authentic self is a bubbly, endlessly enthusiastic extrovert who thinks “synergy” is a personality trait. ( I want to clarify I WAS NOT that person)

But people are built entirely differently. If you are an introvert like me you may be naturally selective, valuing quiet depth, and genuinely stay away from empty chatter, the office isn’t a playground. It’s a secure server. To survive, grow, and lead, you can’t just walk through the door as you are. I believe, you have to pass Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) just to bridge the gap between your quiet nature and a loud world.

Let me tell you, I learned this the hard way. When I started working almost 20 years ago, my default setting in meetings or social gatherings was absolute silence. I used to sit there, quietly amazed by people who could seamlessly talk their way through a room full of strangers or higher-ups with 100% fluency. I often had the best, most strategic ideas in the room, but I was simply too shy to voice them unless someone explicitly asked. I would rather do the work with dedication than be asked to talk

Naturally, I got tagged as the “doer,” not the “thinker.” People valued my execution, but they would hesitate to put me upfront to lead. It was a wake-up call. I realized that keeping quiet, no matter how brilliant the background processing was, failed to cut it. ( I am a different person now … trust me who does not shy away from calling out things but it was an uphill task growing up)

It took a massive amount of self-training, rewiring my mind and adapting to learn how to give my ideas a voice. I had to consciously build a persona kind of like a theatrical password just to make the room believe I could bake the cake and be the creator of fancy pineapple upside down cake too

But generating the code doesn’t get easier with experience; the stakes just get higher. The true strain of being an introverted high-performer hits when you have to navigate a complex web of diverse stakeholders just to get a project across the finish line.

You know the job inside out. You have the expertise, the drive, and the vision to execute it by yourself. Yet, the corporate machinery demands that “process” must be followed and with that comes the next P — People !

This means instead of putting your head down and focusing on the actual work, your day is just consumed. You have to charm, nudge, and align with a vast catalog of human personalities, each operating on a completely different frequency. On any given day, you are chasing down acquaintances for sign-offs, politely requesting adults to do their basic tasks, or listening to a chatty stakeholder completely digresses into a monologue about their weekend. Trust me for a quiet introvert this is a Herculean task more than doing 21 surya namaskars in 30 minutes

To do this, you deploy the second factor of 2FA: your emotional bandwidth which is extremely elastic. Externally, you paste on the cheerful smile, act out the script, and try to keep things aligned. But internally? The battery drain is real and your nervous system is almost shut down

This brings us to the ultimate glitch in the workplace mandate of “total authenticity.” If I were to show up as my completely authentic self, the innate me-quiet, intensely selective, and preferring execution over endless alignment meetings, the machinery would be screechy. The mask isn’t fake; it is a tool of navigate the system

We are told that introverts and extroverts need to coexist to create organizational balance. But looking at the modern landscape, I genuinely wonder: but can they ?

I had read this on Insta :

“Extroverts are from Mars, Introverts are from a quiet corner of Venus trying to read a book while Mars keeps hosting a mandatory team-building mixer.”

Until the corporate operating system gets a balanced upgrade that lets both worlds thrive, we will keep drafting process and process flow, guiding the tangents, and smiling through the chaos. But when the laptop finally closes, we must give ourselves permission to drop the verification prompts, power down, and retreat into the quiet safety of who we are when no one is asking us to prove it.

PS — I love and admire my extrovert friends (the very few who I have) for being able to lead the way and talk about it. Yin and Yang they say !

Thank you for reading. God Bless
