Analysing the next move for the FTSE 100… Is 10,000 the New Floor, or a Dangerous Illusion? By Lane Clark of TPP…..

The FTSE 100 has finally pulled back from its highs.
And the timing couldn’t be more interesting.
After pushing into record territory, the index is now hovering around a level that matters far more than most headlines will admit:
10,000.
So the real question investors should be asking isn’t “should I buy?”
It’s this:
👉 Is 10,000 a genuine floor, or just a psychological number waiting to give way?
Why this level matters……
As the UK cash market opened this morning, the FTSE was trading around 10,025. For some investors this is value, particularly if 10,000 is the new floor……
But that word — if — does a lot of heavy lifting.
Because markets don’t move on hope.
They move on confirmation.
And right now, confirmation is mixed.
The case for the FTSE……..
The FTSE 100 remains one of the cheapest major equity indices globally.
Compared to the S&P 500 and Nasdaq:
- Valuations are lower
- Earnings expectations are less stretched
- And sentiment is far less euphoric
That matters.
The FTSE is also structurally different to US markets.
It’s not dominated by mega-cap tech trading at premium multiples.
It’s driven by cash-generative, dividend-paying businesses, many of which earn the majority of their revenues overseas.
That gives it:
- Built-in currency protection
- Exposure to global growth
- And a natural hedge against domestic UK weakness
The commodity elephant in the room……
Let’s be honest.
A huge driver of recent FTSE strength has been commodities.
Oil.
Gold.
Energy heavyweights like BP and Shell.
If commodities remain bid, the FTSE could absolutely regroup and push higher.
But if oil, metals, or energy prices roll over, the index will feel it very quickly.
This is why blind “buy the dip” thinking is dangerous.
And then there’s geopolitics……..
Markets are currently acting as if:
- Global tensions are background noise
- Conflict escalation is “priced in”
- And nothing truly bad will happen
History tells us that’s rarely how this ends.
Geopolitics doesn’t ring a bell before volatility spikes.
It shows up after positioning is already wrong.
Which brings us to the most important point of all.
This isn’t about predictions, it’s about control..
At TPP, we don’t need markets to go up in a straight line.
We don’t rely on:
- Hope
- Headlines
- Or being permanently invested at all costs
Our edge is risk management, discipline, and adaptability.
That’s why:
- We can step aside when risk outweighs reward
- We can re-enter when probabilities improve
- And we can still perform when markets churn, spike, or go nowhere
In 2025, that approach delivered an average return of 31.2% on our TPP strategies.
But here’s the truth most firms won’t tell you:
👉 Our real value shows up when markets gyrate… and end up flat.
That’s when traditional investors stall.
And that’s when active, benchmark-beating strategies earn their keep.
Could this coming year look like that???? I wouldn’t rule it out…
If you’re feeling unsure right now……..
If you’re:
- Sitting on cash
- Fully invested but uncomfortable
- Unsure whether to buy, wait, or protect
- Or worried markets are overbought and geopolitics are being ignored
There is another option.
A benchmark-beating option.
An active option.
A risk-managed option.
It’s called TPP.
