Iraq’s footballing journey on the world stage began at 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, the nation’s first and only appearance at the tournament. On 29th July 2007, Iraq defeated Saudi Arabia 1–0 all thanks to one man named Younis Mahmoud, securing the countries first AFC Asian Cup.

The victory was widely viewed as one of the greatest underdog stories in Asian football history and provided a rare moment of unity for millions of Iraqis in which created a unity between sects in Iraq and ended the sectarian war in 2007. Midfielder Nashat Akram reflected on the significance of the achievement declaring that there was “only one Iraqi people.” For many Iraqis, the triumph demonstrated football’s ability to bring together communities despite division and hardship facing the country at the time.
